Even though this is 30 years old, I do find this interesting. Only looked at it this afternoon, and thought I'd throw out some observations, and include those things previously solved by others:
1. I agree the PLACE IN ORDER indicates that the verses need to be rearranged, in accordance with the letters spelling that out in the pictures, so verses should be:
1, 3, 12, 4, 2, 5, 7, 8, 10, 9, 6, 11
Also, agree there may be ambiguity in placing the E's and R's; however, Occam's Razor might lead one to simply keep them in the order they appeared.
2. Agree that the map of the states gives CASSIOPEIA, but also in the corner, it says "8 States," so I'm going to assume that means something too.
3. Agree that the highlighted letters in the states surrounding the narrative spell PINE TREES
4. Agree that the line "Miss Muffet's meal didn't cost a dime" means free whey = FREEWAY
Now for the spaghetti:
1. The first verse, says: "Although the Sun rises in the East, Low lands will have frost," which means to me the hills are on the east, so the lowlands are on the west.
It also says "Tomorrow is another day," Gone with the Wind? And, "Over and over again," which immediately reminded me of the movie Groundhog Day, but since that didn't come out 'til 1993, I guess that's out.
2. The "Sioux Chief" Oconomowoc is definitely not Sioux. "Oconomowoc" is a city in Wisconsin, whose name is taken from the Potawatomi language, and means "waterfall." Sioux Oconomowoc = Sioux Falls? South Dakota is the only state of the 48 running around the narrative that is not completely spelled out, and it's not due to space as "New Hampshire" fits just fine at the bottom.
3. Grandad heads to the the "Prairie Grass Pass." South Dakota was home to "The Little House on the Prairie," so there are definitely prairies there, and to the east is the elevated Couteau des Prairies.
4. AZAR and ARVIN are rather odd names...AZAR ARVIN and HAL give me 6 states' postal abbreviations AZ, AR, NH, VA, LA, RI...too bad it's not the "8 States" mentioned on the map.
5. Also, DEL, MAC and CY may give something, but doesn't appear to be a straightforward anagram. OTOH, DONLEG = GOLDEN
6. I assume the "first tree in the third row," and "first tree in the second row" point to something as well.
7. It looks to me like the grasses in the picture in the 5th picture might be concealing some letters; I clearly see an "E" and maybe an "A", "I", or "Z."
Anyway, just thought I'd throw my thoughts out, and see if anything stimulates someone. It's highly unlikely I'll ever go BOTG to actually try and find it.
