You know what else is weird about this painting? Cadillac Mountain is on the east side of the island. But the sun is setting over the water in the picture, indicating it is the west side of the island.

Hi, Having visited the island recently to go hiking - I can tell you that when you are at the top of Cadillac mountain you see water on both sides. Acadia National Park was a great place to go hiking regardless of whether you plan to look for the key or not.

Yeah, but the illustration isn't at the top of the mountain, it's on the road heading up to it, which I believe is on the east coast?

. There has been some discussion about the alpha numeric substitution on the license plate to get Acadia. I think there are additional substitutions that work well also (a simple one is A CADI, in ref to the car). However I want to point out another possible use of the license plate and the Montreal sign. To me it looks like the sign is connected to the license plate to get the string of letters
IMONTREAL
which can be read as IM ON TREAL
And some other interpretations

Could just be a reference to goof in a movie filmed in Acadia where the couple was watching the sunset over the ocean - i.e. facing east instead of west. Can't remember the film. Cider House Rules maybe?

I was pondering these pages the other day and found myself wondering if/why the mileage numbers are wrong. Is there a point on the island that is really 3 miles from Bar Harbor AND 4 miles from Jordan pond AND 4 miles from Sieur De Monts Spring? If there is it is definitely not Cadillac Mt. And if there is they are not all in the same direction as indicated by the signs.
The entire island is only about 12 miles across, so Norumbega Mtn at 16 miles certainly stands out as wrong. Even if it is not "as the crow flies", and you took roads, Norumbega is not 16 miles from Cadillac. And if it is not "as the crow flies" and you took roads, then Kennebunkport is certainly more than 116 miles from Cadillac.
Still trying to work out what the numbers actually mean.

The "40 MPH" sign in this illustration raises a larger question that could have its own topic / thread but it fits here so I'll just post it.
Does anyone else feel as if the illustrations "talk to" each other? That one illustration or chapter text could provide a clue about another? In other words, we can get clues about decoding one image from what we find in another image.
For instance "40 mph" sign might be telling us to connect the Panhandle Sam illustration to p. 40, with its "Pass the time" phrase. But why? Are there other cross-page clues like that one?

. I think there is a tremendous amount of cross linking between the pages. For example the sign colors reading red yellow book can easily refer to the books on page 30. There are red books, yellow books and a red yellow book (orange).
The Orange book is in the Lake of the woods... And there is a Lake Wood on mountdesert island.
Next to the Orange book is a book that has W go on it. The next page 31 has go West on it. I think I found dozens if not hundreds of links between the pages

I noticed the dice again — opposite sides of dice add to 7. The top die seems like it could be correct but the bottom one is definitely wrong. The 1 and 6 should be opposite side, not adjacent. It could be an indicator to something else, but I don't know what.
