"I gave $25,000 for a beautiful Flemish chest that they think dates to like about 1150AD"
"Dated to about AD 1150, the chest is ....."
"The chest itself is rare, 16th century Italian."
What's with all the inconsistencies about the chest?

That's a good question. I hadn't seen these, good catch. The dates, I don't know. You have one saying 16th century, the others the 12th. Maybe just a mistake by the reporter? The descriptions; Flemish, Romanesque, and Italian, fit for the 12th century period if the chest were made in the area of northern Belgium or France that was populated by the Flemish peoples (Dutch-Germanic). They were Flemish, and the area was controlled by the Holy Roman Empire. So "Italian" fits as a description via that political control as much as the other descriptions. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belgium

The mistake may or may not be Margie's. She was quoting Doug Preston, and maybe Doug misremembered. Though Margie did get Forrest's age wrong (89 vs. 87).

Margie's latest article claimed Doug referred to the chest as 16th century Italian.

Thanks Zaph. If you had not drawn my attention to it, I would never have seen the quotation marks, nor have made the inference that the remark about the chest being 16th century Italian was from Doug Preston. Guess it's time for another eyesight test!

I just added this 16th century Italian chest to my "two treasures" post. Along with something else.

What in the world! There’s a picture of the chest even on the back of the Thrill of the Chase!

ff has said:
"and I know the treasure chest is wet"
tew (tjuː) vb (tr) to beat (leather, etc) into a smooth condition
wet -> tew -> beat leather -> teba leather -> box(H.) leather -> leather box
