All that follows is just my opinion, so take it for the electrons it was transmitted with. Forrest's "warm waters" are warm exclusively because of temperature. Nothing more complicated than that. Not a name suggestive of warmth; not a warm color like red, orange, yellow brown, etc.; not a cozy/comfortable feeling or memory; not blood, tears or sweat; nothing metaphoric. WARM. Literally straightforward.
It's also not something utterly arbitrary, like one of a thousand warm or hot springs, reservoirs, lakes or glaciers.
The confluence of two warmer-than-average water bodies is certainly much better (e.g. the Gibbon and Firehole combining to form the Madison), but it is still not unique in the Rockies (more than 66,000 links north of Santa Fe).
The correct answer is something a child would (and has, I might add) guess -- a "big picture" answer that should be obvious to all in light of where Forrest spent 19 of 20 childhood summers.
So geysers. Where is the greatest concentration of geysers in the world? How many ways do geysers "halt"? (This is not rocket science, my fellow Fenners.) If "geysers" plural are indeed the warm waters that halt, where do THEY halt?

Just one of my infamous guess':
WWH when the underground cavity no longer contains enough water/steam?

Lookinup: think geographically, not geophysically, and you'll be more on-target...

Zaphod73491,
The largest concentration of geysers in the world being in the Upper Geyser Basin, "28 miles from the west entrance of Yellowstone"

This really is the quintessential question, isn't it? If any or all of us figured that out, I would imagine that we would be very close to solving the rest of it. My personal opinion was always that it required more imagination than the firehole river or a hot spring. I used to think that warm waters halt when you die - and so I always defaulted to Marvin, and Temple - as the starting point. In some ways, I still believe that. I was also very keen on Oh!'s 109 degree idea - which is also very imaginative. Could it be a dead geyser or something? Sure. But I think that like many other things that there is a double meaning in this clue. One which gets you to the right place, and another that is the actual "feature" at the place for confirmation. To merge the 109 and death ideas - consider that the grave of Sacajawea is very close to the actual 109/43 mark. I believe that something like this double meaning is the answer for all 9 clues... I do hope someone figures it out in my lifetime. I'd love to know what the right answer was. I do think that the only way this will ever be solved is if the top searchers get together as a group and share. CJ, I'm new here. Where can I find Oh!'s 109 degree idea? It appears that Oh! is a deleted account, since I can't find it in the member area. Can you point me to the location of the post?

Looking at the map from a child's, all I see is the basin in the middle of the map. I can't even see Yellowstone on the 8 1/2 x 11 copy I have. The 1 thing about the map that has bugged me until about 3 minutes ago is that the map looks like the profile of someone laying on HIS back looking at the stars and getting ready look down and find a broken bowl. Does any of this sound familiar? WWWH is GREAT DIVIDE BASIN!!!!

I'm not sure if they're all intact, but I would suggest that you start with a simple Google Search for "Fenn 109/43" - he's been on a number of forums - and may still be active elsewhere. The guy should write a book - like some others have. I'm 100% sure that it would be a good read. He's got some stories for sure. I'll be completely shocked if his ideas aren't part of the final solve - even if his area may not be where it's at.

CJ,
I failed in my attempt to add your previous quote to a reply I had made while offering comments in regards to "Sacagawea"; (see page 2.) Hope they will be useful to you as well. Additionally; previous '109/43' theories that were shared with us by "OH" have been top drawer IMO, and could be well worth the find.
Top drawer.

Although he was quite bright, I feel he had a “my way or the highway” attitude. He wasn’t much for receiving alternate ideas or when people questioned his ideas.

Although he was quite bright, I feel he had a “my way or the highway” attitude. He wasn’t much for receiving alternate ideas or when people questioned his ideas. I don't entirely disagree - except to say that he had some pretty good reasons for his strong belief - and I never went to Kirwin, but I'd still like to hike up Indian Creek to Mt. Wood sometime and have a look. Neither of those are on any (current) maps - nor are two other places that I think are part of the "map". I still think that he was on the right track - and that the starting point is there - or at least related - to his idea. Wolf got me wondering about Messier 109 - but I'm not yet convinced that the solution is "stellar" either. If it is, I wouldn't be surprise if "try the wheel" and big medicine wheel isn't linked to that along with the 109 concept...I think the final solution is pretty complicated - and I have no expectation that it will be found in my lifetime (let alone FF's).

I see a lot of comments in this forum referencing OH!'s ideas, so I thought they must be pretty darn good and worth researching.
