Hi Vibeup: a reminder quote from Fenn that should be pondered: "Technology is not going to help you find that treasure." This was from Everything is Stories EIS Radio on 8/8/2013.

Thanks for the reminder zaphod. I agree the detector won't help find the right spot, but I'm going out early this year so will likely be searching in the snow. My plan is to use the detector if my search area still has a few inches of snow which could make it difficult to physically see the chest. Forrest also said this during the 2013 Collected Works Q&A:

Ahh, yes. Snow. MW Weekly Words (4/22/2016): "*Snowy days are a searcher's enemy"
I've been BOTG enough times to know it would be "expensive folly" for me to search if there is any snow covering my search location. But if you're anxious to get out there, I see no harm in taking a metal detector -- assuming of course you're not searching in a National Park ;-)

I'm not able to take time off work during the best part of the summer search season. I'm searching at 9000' elevation on National Forest land so even in June there is potential for some snow. I'm assuming that the chest itself is probably not visible in snow considering the Weekly Words you shared hence the detector as a backup. I figured others would like to see how well a $99 Walmart detector would work to locate a bronze chest.

I did a second test this morning with a yardstick added so you can see how the detector response changes as the coil gets further away. So you're the one who bought the chest on Ebay? How do you like it? I just saw something on Sacha's video, posted by Sakar. "Eric Sloane's 3 methods of camouflage : 1) Conceal 2) Mimic 3) Disrupt The adobe mud idea would cover 1&2" I've been wondering this and was just reminded, but: 1 - what happens when different kinds of metal requiring different settings on the detector are present? Can they interfere with the reading? 2 - Can some lead foil placed on top mask the metal below?

Yes, this is a chest that was cast by Chris and I picked it up in person yesterday. It's gorgeous. I'll post of detailed video of it shortly.
The metal detector I got is a cheap Bounty Hunter brand and it only has a "Sensitivity" knob and a "Trash Elimination" knob. All of these tests were done with the trash elimination turned off and the sensitivity on 50% and the last part of test #2 is with sensitivity at 100%.
I'd be happy to do other tests with it upon request, but I don't have any lead foil or fancier metal detectors to play with.

I'd love to see that video of that chest. He did a nice job of making it obviously different yet very representative of Indulgence.

He did say that a metal detector would help if you were in exactly the right spot....you can find the quote on tarryscant.com

I would think that he would have taken steps to somehow make metal detectors unlikely to find the pulse of Indulgence. That exact spot might be hard to get to, as in a tree in the way or something like that.

I think both quotes apply. If you're in the right spot (solved the poem), a metal detector will help. If you have not solved the poem (and are not in the right spot) the technology will not help you.

Like turn over a log and see what’s underneath it?

Someone else pointed this out somewhere else months ago, but in the Totem Cafe /Frosty chapter, Frosty sounds like a metal detector, polarity changes and all.
