I'm making this thread to put the questions I've been getting about the hunt, and my answers (if I can answer them! First to start, here are some questions that I have been asked so far, and my answers to them. I will add more Q & A as I get more questions!
And if you have a general question about the hunt, you can ask it here. If it is about certain elements in the puzzle, I might not be able to answer it if it is too specific! But I'll try to answer all the questions I can.
QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
QUESTION: "I see some weird things, like extra things, or things that don't seem like they should be there, or things that seem to be missing...are they just oversights?"
ANSWER: You should treat anything "weird" as part of the puzzle. I triple-and-quadruple-checked to make sure there are no mistakes and that I left nothing out, but if you do see something that looks like a mistake, let me know, and I'll tell you whether it's a mistake or not. Also, if you know someone else who is working on the lamp, you can check with them and see if they have the same thing on their lamp. Remember, don't change anything on the lamp!
QUESTION: When I am trying to figure out the puzzle, does it matter what order all the cords go in? If you straighten them out, hanging from the lamp, sometimes for instance the short strand might appear on the left and the long strand on the right, or vice versa. When I am trying to solve the riddle, do I have to keep that short strand on the left? Or can I put it on the right?
ANSWER: When I designed the puzzles I knew that it would be impossible to make all the hanging cords in exactly the right order, and have them hang that way permanently....because loose strings tend to migrate! So it would have been really unfair to make you keep track of the exact order of all those loose hanging cords. That would be impossible, I think. So I made it so that it wouldn't matter if one of them got in front of the other. Just leave them the way they are.
Not everything in the lamp is part of the puzzle, just like not everything in a treasure hunt map helps you find the treasure. And for instance the paintings in "Masquerade" had a lot of details that weren't used for clues. .Some of it is just the macrame that holds everything together.. For instance when you see some of the cords hanging together in pairs, it might be only because I needed two cords for the knot.that I had to have above that. Some of the things MIGHT be important. You have to figure out what things are important and what things are just part of the macrame holding everything together.
