I posted this on the Facebook page, and I am re-posting it here for those of you who don't use Facebook. (I've been doing that for my other Facebook posts too.) If you are confused about the different sizes and colors of beads, read this -- it might help. The crystal beads are in 3 different sizes, plus there are some teeny tiny green glass beads. Keep this in mind: ALL KEYS EXCEPT FOR ONE are represented by the same exact size crystal bead. The reason for this one Key's different size will become clear when you do the Final Puzzle. Then it will make all the sense in the world. But right now at the beginning, this Key's different size is really confusing everyone. I didn't really intend for this to be confusing....When I made the sizes, I was thinking about the Final Puzzle, not thinking so much about the beginning!
You will see a third size crystal bead (along with the tiny green glass beads). As I said before, these particular beads do not themselves represent a Key -- they are used only as placer beads -- place marker guides -- for the nearby beads that do represent a Key.
I could have used something besides beads for these place markers, like knots, but I had to put each one on one single string. A knot would take more than one string. I've been told that I'm giving it away by saying this, but not really...because BOTH the beads in question have one single string going through the bead hole. One of them does have more than one string adjacent to the bead, but only one string.goes through the bead there too, and if you look, I spaced the other strings there slightly away from the center where the string goes through the bead hole. There was a reason for that too. So for both of these beads in question, there was some reason why I wanted only one string to go through the bead.
I wanted to make the placer bead a muted color (or hue) so that it would not distract from the rest of the lamp.
I have also said that for each of the four Keys, the beads representing that Key are of only one certain color. That's still true. The placer beads are a different color than nearby beads.. But the placer beads themselves do not represent the Key.
I chose the color of the placer beads mostly for aesthetic reasons, but also because it fits with something in the Final Puzzle, as you will see later. This happens to be the very same reason why one of the Keys is a different size than the others. Like I said, this will make all the sense in the world when you do the Final Puzzle. Right now it might seem to you that I made it deliberately confusing, to have the same color on two different size beads, near each other. There is a reason for it that you won't see until later.
I had to post something about this, because I realized that the placer beads were going to be a source of endless confusion to every single player, right from the beginning.. When I made the lamp, I didn't mean for the placer beads to be confusing. So I owed it to the players to say something about that. Otherwise, the placer beads would have been a red herring that I didn't intend. And I did say, "no red herrings".
You'll have to figure out for yourselves which ones are the placer beads and which one is actually a Key. And since you've read this LONG post all the way to the end, here's a hint for a reward! The ones that represent a Key will have a starting place that you can see in the arrangement of the beads (actually a double starting place).
