In the 200/500 foot thread there began a discussion on when do you admit defeat and face the fact your ‘interpretations’ to either some or all the clues might be wrong? It was considered, which would feel worse once the correct solution is made known (and you weren't the one who found it)? That you continued to keep with the wrong ideas until the end or that you abandoned correct thoughts which would have eventually led to the treasure chest? I’ll just copy and paste from the thread below: What will those searchers, who continue to go back time and time and time again, using their same old thoughts, think when the correct solution is known? I would imagine they would think, like Forrest has said, 'Why didn't I think of that?-- and they will realize they could have if they hadn't been so set and unable to admit that what they are thinking, no matter how brilliant and clever it is, was wrong. I would imagine once the solution is revealed there will many searchers who begin to share their 'brilliant interpretations'. And they will be brilliant.... There are many puzzle methods people are crafting out of the poem that are extremely clever... BUT...and this is key....It doesn't make them 'correct'. I think those that continue to go back to the wrong location and those who abandoned the correct WWWH (or other clues) will feel much the same.... because it seems each is just as equally as wrong as the other for the right thing to have done.... And it begs for the question to be asked....which I will create another thread for (which is this one): When do you admit defeat and consider other ideas? There is a favorite quote of mine in one of my business books.... it is: "If at first you don't succeed, try, try, again. But then quit. Because there's no point in being a damn fool about it." ~ W C Fields (comedian) It makes me laugh... because I know I've been, and probably am, one of those fools at times.... But there are times changing direction is the right and best thing to do. BUT THEN I also know there is the following mantra and imagery: What are searchers to do? lol. We'll move that discussion to another thread (which again, is this thread

I guess you track back and see if you made any mis-steps. I made a few this year (I believe each clue is a location and I believe we follow the route Forrest took from his car). With any luck, you just went wrong at the end.
The mistakes I see in almost everyone are 'confirmation bias' and what I call 'wedded to your solve'. To guard against the first, you can look for information that disagrees with your theory or for information that would prove a different theory. I have tried running ideas past other searchers but find they tend to outline everything in terms of their own potential solution (hence the good suggestion to have a 'newbie' in your council of the wise - great idea!) To guard against the second is even harder. It's hard to let go of an idea once you've got it, but if you've exhausted all avenues, one thing to do is to go back to the beginning, a little wiser.

. Jenny,
This is a great topic, not easy to address, and the answer(s) will be part of what separates the winner from all others. Your cartoon is a beautiful illustration of the dilemma.
I believe part of the answer involves heavy doses of effective puzzle solving skills (language skill, focused use of imagination, open mindedness, logic, pattern recognition, etc) and how to combine them in an effective way. Discernment and judgement come into play, and self-critique.
Puzzle (problem) solving uses information gathering in the initial stages (putting the possible puzzle pieces on the table). If you can make good progress (which involves judgement and self-critique) with the information available, then continue down the path you are following and dont evaluate others approach. But this is slippery, because ones judgement as to progress is involved. If someone thinks they are making good progress but continues to consider other approaches, they lose focus. They also probably dont really believe in their approach because they are still looking elsewhere.
The bigger question might be... if youre not sure of your present and past approaches, how much should you be considering others approaches?
Consider other approches and information until you believe you are on the right path. Then focus. If at some time it doesnt pan out, go back and see if you need more information or other approaches.

Another interesting thing to note. I've only been at this about 2 months, although I have learned a lot in that time frame just from reading everything, but it seems like most of the long time searchers have either quit or are just now quitting or in the process of quitting. I wonder if the solver will be someone who picks up the thread of one of these old solves of theirs.

What if the 9 clues aren't the usual suspects we all talk about endlessly, but are something completely different. Maybe the 9 clues can be found in the lines with the 9 capital I's in the poem.

Isa Lake (on the Continental Divide)- Isa=As I spelled backwards + gone alone=lagoon (synonym for lake)

Stanza 1 may contain location names, whereas it appears stanzas 2-4 are broadly directional clues. I'm not sure this stacks up to everything Forrest has said, but I'll ponder your idea.

The only thing in the chest that ff would like to have back is the silver bracelet he won while playing pool. This is something to consider for working out the solve - THE GAME OF POOL and all aspects related to it.
Begin it where warm waters halt - POOL
Just a thought and not saying this is on the spot...

There is a conundrum involved with the silver bracelet
Are there any bronze animals in the chest, Indulgence, or anything bronze? ” ~Thanks,Carolyn
Nothing bronze at all Carolyn, or even silver. I wanted more expensive metals in Indulgence. That’s why I chose gold. There is a gold frog that’s very old.f
overt-trove
Am I going crazy, did Forrest Fenn state in his book that his silver row bracelet was also in the chest? If so then how can he actually state truthfully in this reply that there is not even any silver in the chest, he wanted it to be all gold. What are we supposed to believe?
I have seen little further discussion about this statement of ff's.

Maybe he was specifically referring to animal sculptures

Kaotbliss, It doesn't sound like that to me. The question includes 'anything bronze'. The answer was 'nothing bronze, or even silver.' It appears that ff is saying quite unequivocally that there is nothing in the chest that is silver. Despite appearances, there is a way to resolve the contradiction. If found, a major piece of information is revealed.

Hey there bownarrow … All of that is based on yet another verbal comment from Forrest. Either a misstatement by Forrest or he was focused on the chest's gold, in his response to Carolyn. Much ado about nothing. Searchers make way too much of his verbal comments, in my opinion. Hi Drifter,
That is possible. I took that kind of a position with respect to the contradiction until very recently when I revisited the problem. While thinking about it, something that I had read in a book quite a while back, suddenly popped back into my head, and I realized that it answered how to resolve the contradiction.
The information that is revealed by resolving the contradiction is a major geographical clue.
Given what it is, I have little or no doubt that the contradiction was intentionally created by ff.
