One of the first trials I did on the "Et4ue ..." was to convert alpha to numeric, and look for groupings.
The end grouping looked like BULLSEYE and seemed to tie in with the context hints, as:
"I (eye) stared (eyes) at it for hours"
"Nothing came to me" nothing = O, a bullseye.
Although, beyond that, I was unable to confirm.

In the beginning of Ch 27 "In Our Nature", Nels lists those who helped create the hunt for him, including Paul, who wasn't even on the hunt.
But, he leaves out Sue. Why?
Is her name found in SURREAL, which is mentioned twice on the first page? Nels had previously written about his affection for Sue, and this chapter begins "I love the SUrrEal"
SUE RR AL / LA ?
RR is "in ouR natuRe"

"What's wrong with weird?"
(this one beats Fenn's "where warm waters halt")
At least two features of the quote, one has just been hinted at.
