I did exactly the same thing! But someone else's post talked about having a fat hand, which made me go "Ohhhhhh."

It occurred to me today that my hunt for the stone has a lot of similarities to the book. For instance, I just got back from my second trip to the same town. Two different places; both I thought matched the book and clue. Both had multi-trunked maples with lots of cracks nearby. And the last place had a sign! Right where I was looking I found a letterbox. Not just any letterbox--it was the same box that I was first finder of about 9 years ago. I even have a trove from when I was little. It's a small metal treasure chest that I used to keep my special stuff in. I lost the key to the padlock years ago and I don't even remember what's in there. Maybe...a glass 'rock' (clear bottle glass that had been melted into a lump), a rubber shoe from some kind of doll, and a packet of magic snakes. Remember those? They are little black pellets that expand into 'snakes' when you touch a lighted match to them. www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvdNg3BnXFgI'll have to pick the lock someday and see what's inside. So...if this is really mimicking the book, it means that someone else will find the stone!

Ok, I'm going to share my very amusing interpretation of this clue because subsequent clues make it obvious that I was way off-track.
My first thought when I read "start at the end" was the place in the book where she met a biker on the bike path. He asked "is this the beginning or the end?" Since she was near Spot Pond in Arlington and she tells him Bedford is 12 miles away, that meant Bedford was "the end" in that context.
So I went to the end of the bike path in Bedford and looked for a multi-trunked maple near a crack. I did find a tree and many cracks. But it was a really crummy location. There were very few trees, not to mention graffiti. To get to the maple, I had to step over a lot of trash including a board with nails sticking up out of it. I didn't find anything, and it didn't seem like the right spot anyway. (It reminded me of their second search location that had the homeless shelter).
So next I noticed that she tells the biker Bedford is 12 miles away BUT the bike path is only 10. I would think living right near it, she would know that. She mentions in the book that she and David searched 250 feet away from a marker because that number was mentioned in the video. Her mentioning 12 could be a clue. So next I used Google maps to find what's 12 miles away from the end of the bike trail.
That point lands in a couple of parks.
So now the very amusing part. She had used 'bait' in the poem where 'bate' is really the correct word. If you look at the ends of the maple leaves, they seem to be pointing to letters which can be anagramed to CAT BATE. Ooo, maybe she meant "cat bait" if I do the opposite switch as the word in the poem.
One of the parks I found is called Minnie Reid Conservation Land. The most famous Minnie I know of is Minnie Mouse, and a mouse would certainly be cat bait.
I did find a few multi-trunked maples at Minnie Reid, one of which was right next to a stone wall. Lots of cracks there! But alas, no treasure stone.

I don't have the book so know nothing about the nature of this hunt. From just reading the first clue, I would guess something to do with candlepin bowling. Lanes are maple. Pins are small. Only in New England. Probably difficult to pick up and throw with meaty hands. The crack to reach into is the ball return.
Just wild thoughts.

She’s said you need the book for the hunt. All the clues relate to things found within its pages.

“After goin’ right around, we had ourselves some ups and downs, two of each, if you must know. But I’m warnin’ you, the last down gives no quarter, and I nearly slid on me sorry behind into that many-trunked maple...“
Candlepin bowling. Three rolls per frame. After one round, two more times up and down. Again - many trunked maple is the lane. She nearly slid because the lane is slippery.
Only question is - are there any places open now? Or even better - are there any outdoor public alleys?
