Forrest drove a sedan. Don't overthink it. Sedans and 4wds are not mutually exclusive, although I doubt Forrest went blasting into the Rockies in an Imprezza. Correct. Sedans are defined, simply, as a vehicle with separate compartments for the engine, passengers, and cargo....as usual, ambiguous answer. What did her rule out? Convertible? Truck? Station Wagon? Here's the north american definition: an automobile having a closed body and a closed trunk separated from the part in which the driver and passengers sit; a sedan.

As I heard my American grandparents distinguish things, this definition is closer: A closed automobile having two or four doors and a front and rear seat. www.thefreedictionary.com/sedanIt was used to distinguish from a Coupe.

Remember Forrest is from the start of the 30's, People of his generation refer to automobiles in 4 class's, Coup's, Sedans, Wagon's, and Truck's. and later Jeep's. When Forrest said Sedan he was referring to a car that was not a SUV, or larger, and not a Jeep which is what he drives today. Some where he mentions at the time he was driving a Honda Accord that he referred to as a sedan, but not saying that was the sedan he was driving when he hid the treasure. If that were the case he would have limited many a " Hidey Spot". Maybe that is why he will not say what the sedan he was driving was.
