He mentions it in this interview, at about the 2:10 mark. Not sure if he references it elsewhere.

I do not think he said it that way, Follow the clues in the back of the book. I mAy somewhat agree, but he never said that, that I can find. IMHO You must know where he parks the bus that last time, when he says "when we landed, "

We've just linked to two videos in which he has very clearly stated that the clues will get you to within six inches of the treasure. I agree that you have to know where to park, but after that the clues will then take you to within six inches.

Yes, but I do not hear him say the exact words ---- back of the book. Back of book would nail it, but "follow the path they take", that would leave things more open to each persons interpretation of what part of the book to use for what purpose.

I misunderstood what you were saying. I also feel like I've heard him phrase it as 'back of the book' or something similar though, but maybe not. He is pretty careful about the words he uses. He sounds like he memorized a script so that he wouldn't inadvertently give anything away. I might review a bunch of his interviews to determine exactly what words he uses.

Thanks, 1of628 and minotaurmoreno for the video links.
Ok, so Pete is saying first you have to find the repeated reference. (weak example follows) Let’s say you find the word “no” in the book in many places. Some may take this as New Orleans (N.O.). You would then go to NO and do what the characters do to get within six inches. (the other thing to be aware of is that within "six inches" is an "X", but it would be stretch to take that as marking the spot, but not sure if Pete is playing that piece).
It is easy to find single references to places (I’ll make a thread with an example), but we want the multiple references. Note: this is not the same as picking up various markers, each different along a route that leads to a destination.
We have to weed through the red herrings, too. For example, Nels makes an issue out of counting ancestors (1022) and then mentions his great great great grandfather, Hinds the Camel. Is that a red herring to slow us down?
There are definite and near references to close distances. In “Do You Have a Compass” there are several mentions of “within eight inches of mine” (the mine? mine <> i.e., MN?). (I found an obscure ref to Barnum, MN by the way, but not worth pursuing).
