Zaphod, since we only had the latitude, and I asked if it was New York City, you didn't reply in the affirmative, so I figured something in NYC wasn't what you were looking for. So I gave up on the latitude approach.
Anyway, I like the association to New York City. I have found several things in the book that make me believe NYC is an important city in this hunt.
As for this particular site, however, I can't agree that we are really pin-pointing something. But I won't rule it out.
There is also a Broadway Rolls Candy in addition to the other candy you alluded to.
Thanks for sharing your find. Interesting...

Do we have any 74s in the book?

How is Washington Square related to the North Pole?

Hi GeneticBlend -- reason I didn't publicly acknowledge your NYC was that I was looking for something more specific, and I didn't want to unduly bias people toward NYC by telling you you were "warm". The people who contacted me privately gave me the name of the specific Square. I don't have any doubt that this was an intended landmark by Pete -- the precision is too great. What I question is whether it was for hunt #1 or a later hunt. Maybe he thought he could get away with giving partial coordinates (no longitude) in the book, and then reveal a clue for the 73.99745 in a later secret chapter. Some folks say they have found a decent number of clues for New York, but if so I'm not seeing them yet. Sure, there are a few obvious ones like The Gray Lady and Reader's Digest, but it's hardly in the same boat as all the New Orleans clues. But I'm still looking...

How is Washington Square related to the North Pole? No relation, as far as I can tell.

You need to do further research on the Grey Lady. It may not be intended for NYC. Pete is a sneaky one.

There are many layers to the clues in this book. Once you think you've found something, think again. Many clues have double, maybe triple meanings. You have to keep digging.

My thought was that it had to do with NZ, right after the Polar Race paragraph, NZ is mentioned. And -40 degrees goes right through NZ, don't even have to remove the minus sign. Probably just a coincidence.

I tried to make it work with Nelson, South Island, New Zealand (I was just there in December last year) but the coordinates don't work.

Well, since Mike has let the cat out of the bag and ruined the fun for anyone that was trying to solve it on their own, yes -- it's Washington Square Park. (Sorry, Mike -- had to give you a little ribbing. ;-) The latitude degrees are provided by the temperature (excluding the minus sign), and the minutes and seconds are from the race time. Convert to decimal, and you'll have 40.730833. You don't need the longitude because the latitude is deadnuts on the landmark. Plug these coordinates into Google Maps: 40.730833, -73.99745. (You might also note how close the longitude is to exactly 74). Now one could argue that the latitude line stretches across the entire U.S., so without the longitude you've got nothing. But given that there are at least a few clues to New York City in the book, the fact that the latitude cuts through Manhattan should immediately raise an eyebrow. And the fact that that latitude goes right through the center of the fountain in Washington Square should leave little doubt. But if you're still uncertain, there are the 50 broken-up Snickers bars. What's the number of the famous avenue that terminates at Washington Square? And is it a candy bar? thanks, Zaphod. Great stuff.
Also interesting ... the Polar Race starts in Resolute ,,, 74 deg 41 min 51 sec
One of the 74 in the book, is the Ch 23 keyboard correspondence 2 74 4

toppop, The Grey Lady is a newspaper, but not the New York Times. It is a hint to another area that is popular with this hunt.
