I deciphered the code that is above the map. I was wondering if anyone else has. One part of the message doesn’t make sense to me and I wanted to know if anyone else has a problem with it.

Did you decode it as 1 line or 3 as given in the PDF? I do think it makes a difference.

When using that particular code, you have to have an even amount of letters. If you don't, a "dummy" letter is usually inserted, such as an "X". I think a "Y" was used in the last line as a dummy letter, and a "z" was used in the second line as a dummy letter. However, I am getting something strange for the first two letters of the first line. Also, the first line has an even amount of letters, so it makes me think those first two letters might be important...

IMO the final 3 letters make perfect sense and have a definite meaning. I agree the first two have me stumped at this point but still working on them.

Has anyone come up with some valid explanation for the first 2 letters?

The only thing that came close for me was a highway bill that used those two letters as part of its name that allotted money for highway infrastructures throughout the US. Part of the money went for major roads in NM as well as Indian land roads. However, I think this is really a stretch and the letters probably mean something else. I'll just have to keep "looking up" things I guess. lol

. Since the code solution was posted by TxTh, it seems ok to dicuss in the forum mysteriouswritings.com/the-lost-treasure-mines-of-new-mexico-found-an-h-charles-beil-treasure-hunt/pq tm qu c 40 k pm ct si k p dz mp pi il s u kc th hm fq po ir kc vb z Y bk 40 TxTh posted the decode as LU ROUTE 40 HOLDS THE KEY LOOK FOR THE SIGN ALONG THE WAY xEG 40 ( which is pretty straightforward ) In determining the meaning of LU as Lupton and EG as Gallup, he made this comment ,,,, I already stated that I felt that xEG 40 is the East Gallup exit sign. So I followed Interstate 40 all the way to the Arizona/NM border and there it was, the town of Lupton. This made me think of one of the clues Jenny Kile used in her second scroll puzzle: ROCK ———— LOOK That interprets to Look under Rock. So in HCB’s solution we have Interstate 40 between Lupton and the East Gallup sign. That rules out Pyramid Rock, Church Rock, Fort Wingate, Red Rock State Park and anything else to the East of that sign. ,,,,, which i am still a bit unclear of. Is TxTh saying that because most of the clue is between LU and EG that means that is where to look, between LU and EG, as a type of rebus? Is he also using LU as Look Up or Look Under, as in look under route 40, re he mentioned the Look Under example

When I met with HCharles a few months later we talked about this line and he said "look for sign along the way" was a billboard next to the highway. That billboard was about 150 feet before the bluff. I interpreted LU to be the town of Lupton on the AZ border and EG to be East Gallup. HCharles said the LU and EG didn't mean anything that he could remember so I just lucked out on that. Halfway between them you will see the town of Defiance. In Defiance there is a self storage place that was visible in a photo HCharles posted on his old forum taken from the burial site. Couple that door visible at the storage building with the book for this search (when closed) you see on the cover a photo of the actual bluff with a very recognizable stain (like an hourglass on its side) on one of the flat faces. Using Google Maps, in Street View, this is the location and you can see the rock with the hourglass on its side clearly visible. Is that public or private land? All I can say for sure is that it is a literal dumping ground for trash. It was everywhere up there. Here is a Google Maps link to the site (Be sure and copy the whole link): www.google.com/maps/@35.4961125,-108.862958,3a,75y,82.78h,89.35t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1srHUlXk3JA2JdQcEEeiCnAA!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?hl=en

When I met with HCharles a few months later we talked about this line and he said "look for sign along the way" was a billboard next to the highway. That billboard was about 150 feet before the bluff. Hi TxTh, thank you for all the information in your original "found" article, as well as this one. I looked at the Google Maps link you shared below, but see so many billboards along Rt 40 (Rt 66), that I would have no idea which billboard / sign is being referred to in the decoded message. The LU and EG seem like they need to be part of the solution interpretation, and looks like your solve made good use of them. I don't understand why else HCharles would put them in the coded clue, or why he would say that they weren't relevant. They help to narrow the search area, otherwise how else to know where along Rt 40 to look, except guessing that it would need to be somewhere around where Doc Noss was operating. But, north or south of Rt 40 is would still be unknown, unless I missed something. There is one of the areas i'm having trouble with the HCharles hunts. Seems all relevant information is not contained in the pdf (book). There are various websites (the defunct Treasure Illustrated, which is the one i think you are talking about?, TheTreasureMan.com, Treasuremanforum.com, several facebook groups, youtube videos, and perhaps emails to individuals that contain information that is needed or at least helpful. In the searching that I did for the Doc Noss cache, I didnt see the picture of the self-storage place. I was guessing that you were referring to the door in the pdf photo of Doc Noss and Babe. I can understand how the picture of that self-storage could help immensely to narrow the search, just wondering how we could get there without that photo. I did see the photo on the pdf cover, and figured that's what you meant by "closed book". Got it, so it is the bluff right along the Rt 66? and the blank white billboard is the "sign" that we were to distinguish. Thanks much for this additional information, it is useful to get an idea as to what we are dealing with in these cache hunts.
