Creating this thread to focus on the numbers in the puzzle. p. 34,35 has the Roman numerals which have been interpreted as 1947, the year of the great fire on MDI. Note that this is information outside of the puzzle. Staying on p. 34-35, going to the oval shape that has something that looks like 19(2)5, where the 2 is larger. Just a couple of observations about these pages. We do need to go outside the book to know about the 1947 fire, but Pel did say something along the lines of, "everything is in the book, along with a little knowledge of island history,' so I think he expected us to know what the background of the fire was. I don't think the history itself will lead to the answer, but it helps put the book and its illustrations in context.
With that in mind, the 1925 'medallion' is on the Deer Brook Bridge and looks just like that with the 2 being much larger than the other numbers. this doesn't mean these numbers aren't relevant somehow, but just observing that they didn't alter the appearance for the book.
And you are right about the cherub statue. It was part of a 'frog fountain' but I think it was moved by the owner from MDI.
1947 does seem relevant somehow, with those two pages having the only multi-colored borders that look like they contain some sort of code. My problem with that is that the colors vary way too much to represent anything solid. Too many shades of blue, red, yellow, green..a variety of tans, browns, ecru. One page has colors on a yellow background; the other has a background of orange.
Thanks for this review of some of the numbers in the book. The star code is too complicated to simply be a red herring, but there are soooo many numbers in so many formats - did you notice the Roman numeral II in the columns of FOP's house?

I agree stiparest . Waaayy too complex with the numbers. It’s just Deer Brook bridge. It would cool if we could find a real photo of the frog fountain. As far as 1947, it just seems it is a fun find being the fire happened that year, and a small exercise in Roman numerals. Ill be straight up. I don't think there is anything Polybius, or cipher related outside of basic number sub stuff. It is obvious we need to do something with numbers. Guys, I would focus on the street signs, The reflection page, and what ever the hell is on the bridge above abnaki

I had considered Pi as well, but haven't found a plausible use for it at this point.
The Frog Fountain by Janet Scudder. This is not the one that was in Bar Harbor, but I guess quite a few were made. It was at Archbold Cottage which was partially designed by Janet Scudder, the fountain's creator. She also did a dolphin fountain there as well, but I haven't been able to find a decent picture of that one. The house was on Cleftstone Road and burned in the fire. Someone posted this picture of the fountain on Tweleve in 2009 (scroll down the page)

I'd be happy to discuss the polybius in its own thread, but wanted to quickly reply here (and I cannot get the nested quote to behave for me).
astree says, "Working with a hint in the book, I was able to construct a polybius grid that gave mostly gobbledygook (as said in the nearby page), but then repeated a phrase from that nearby page."
I gave this a try a long time ago (when it was discussed on tweleve, i think) and never had any success. Page 19 has some sets with 8 units (ruining the 1-5 restriction), so I just tried page 47 again. I still got nowhere, and would love to know more about your progress. For example, what do you do with the runs where a single letter appears 3 times in a row? Does your key grid have a pattern that might have resulted from a clue?
thnx

Does anyone have a list of all the numbers hidden in the images? I suppose it would be good to have a comprehensive list of numbers, including the obvious ones, but I'm thinking here of ones that are more subtle.
Here are two I've noticed: - Both of the side dolphins on page 7 have a "2" on their foreheads and a "3" on their beaks (and they seem to be indicating something about reflections).
- The sprite (or whatever she is) on page 26 is clearly making a "4" with her arms and she may also be making a "V" (for 5) with her legs.
The reason those two seem important is that they would both fit inside the curve of the page 19 lens. The curve of the dolphins' backs forms a semicircle, and so does that arch of the grass blade on page 26. And you can fit those pieces into the lens and put the numbers in order (although they would run counterclockwise).
So are we supposed to combine the circles and numbers to make a clock face? It would certainly fit in with the whole theme of clocks and watches in the puzzle.

Some see a 5 on the lighthouse on p. 23. Also a 12 and 23 on the bridge on p. 32. A 1 and 2 (or 3) from the cherub fingers on p. 34/35.
