What bothers me most is the fingers... why only three?(and a thumb) Or am I not looking at it correctly?

I wondered about the number of fingers, too.

oddly, it looks more like a Viking hammer-head battle axe to me -- I've watched too much "Forged in Fire" -- but I'm surprised it's not a tomahawk given the general feel of the American Southwest in the imagery.

There's a cathedral style dome in the handle with 4 segments.

The handle, at the end, is curved the wrong way.

There's a cathedral style dome in the handle with 4 segments. It's also been said to resemble a 'jingle bell'

The hatchet may actually be a pipe tomahawk. The tomahawk became a symbol of war or peace by tribal chiefs. Lewis and Clark carried 50 pipe tomahawks on their expedition west as gifts of peace. Does this place the treasure somewhere along their trail?

New theory on the dome/bell on the hatchet. It may be the 4 corners. Also the butterfly may signify the four states (4 wing spans).

The end looks like the cross section of a socket wrench. Together with the disk - which I initially saw as a clutch flywheel, I get the feeling a motors and industry.

A Casque is a helmet. Early viking helmets were made in four pieces riveted together forming a shape similar to the one on the hatchet handle.

look closely. with added contrast the shape of the wall is in the area at the arrow, at the mid bump in the red line on top. the scene in the box has this wall in the background at the top with what looks like a monument in front/below it. the very bottom of the box suggests a 2-pillar large gate with spheres on top. looking for the location.
