Hi treasure hunters,
I will be heading to Lytham on a fact finding mission to tie in with the book on Wednesday, I will be visiting places mentioned in the last chapter and seeing if I can find things that tie in with this section of the book.
If anyone wants me to look in to anything whilst I’m there then send me a PM or post a reply on here and I will do my upmost to get what you require, if it’s pictures, location information, or inscriptions then feel free to contact me and I’ll get back to you. It’s already been noted that we don’t have to visit these locations to solve the puzzle but I’m intrigued by Henry’s obsession with the sea there and thought I would check it out myself to see if I can understand Henry’s affection for the area.
Just to add, I have no conclusive reason to believe that the cross is buried in Lytham, I haven’t really made much progress with the book, it’s just local to me and I like to experience things I read for myself to help with the imagery.

So I took a trip this morning, and decided to visit the locations set out in the book and take a few pictures. I’ve not mastered the art of sharing individual pictures on Safari, so here’s a link to what I managed to capture... imgur.com/a/XIqfJL0The first picture is of the front of St John’s Church where Henry stopped underneath the lichgate before walking across the marsh, he may have stopped where I was standing, or at any point moving towards the church. The second is a photograph of the windmill on the marsh from directly in front of St John’s church. The third photo was also taken from the same position and shows the spire of St Cuthbert’s church in the background, which is around a mile away from the Marsh. The next photo shows both the Windmill and St John’s church I. The same frame from a different angle. Then I decided to take the walk out of the church which is shown in the next couple of photos. The picture with the car was taken from underneath the lichgate, it’s just a shame the car was parked there as it is a pretty decent view. Then I decided to take a trip to St Cuthbert’s (shown in the next photo), and after wandering around aimlessly for about half an hour I went back to the book and followed the description of Henry standing with his back to the sea and looking at the South trefoil window with his back to the grave and ended up finding the grave of Margaret and Thomas Mercer (shown below the church), the grave was covered by some foliage, but it’s pretty much identical to the one shown in the book, including the letters engraved at the top which I though may have been significant at the time. Notice that Thomas died ages 75 years (which is slightly obscured in the picture from the book). Finally I took a quick trip to Preston to find 245 Fylde Street, only Fylde Street is only a tiny little path which leads on to Fylde Road, it may have had a name change in the last 150 years which a couple of other pictures online suggests, but 245 is no longer an operational store and looks to have been converted to a house. There are stores a few doors down though so I’m pretty sure this would have been where Thomas & Margaret and Henry & Rebecca lived during their time in Preston, especially as it’s less than a mile from Leighton Street and the site of the old Maudlands Station. I couldn’t find any sort of inscriptions that may have been of note but I hope these perspectives may be of benefit to people. I haven’t got a clue where to start on anything but for those of you that think lytham is a potential site I hope it’s helpful.

inatimate1, thanks for taking the photos, I did much the same on google street view, but obviously couldn't get any views in the church, just out of interest did you check around the lichgate, any carved writing or hidie holes

inatimate1, thanks for taking the photos, I did much the same on google street view, but obviously couldn't get any views in the church, just out of interest did you check around the lichgate, any carved writing or hidie holes I had a look around briefly but there was nothing there that looked like a pretty secure hiding place, plus there was someone doing gardening work on the hedges next to the lichgate and I didn’t want him to go off and report that there was a dodgy looking man with pink hair disturbing God’s land 😂 There was a post at the end of the marsh which had a conspicuous looking hole in it, I’m guessing it’s where people would have tied their horses in the past, but there was nothing in there either. On a point of interest though, directly in front of the church on the marsh behind where the car was parked there was an area of land which looked like it had been disturbed at some point due to its lack of vegetation, however I’d be amazed if someone like the author would have dug up the ground there given how busy the road on the promenade is both in terms of vehicles and pedestrians, plus the tyre marks around the patch suggest it may be due to vehicle wear rather than some sort of excavation work. The marsh itself is very big, so if it is hidden somewhere along the fronnthen there’s definitely a lot of space to plan something. I’m going to try and crack some of these clues and see if I can find something more concrete.
