if you take the right side of the gate and move it to the left it gives you the image of the wings in the floor. At least thats how I see it. If those are the wings in the verse then that is where it was. The picture above shows how things are being washed away. Trust me it is far worse now. All that sand is gone.
If I am wrong ... so be it and I wish you well in your search on other locations. I just wish I had been there in 2013.

Here's a picture of the original painting. Notice some of art work on the bottom and sides have been truncated in the book; as if lost. Here's a nudge: Closed hand then open hand is sign language for lost.

I like that “ Choice”. Sign language for lost. You also might say in the painting, the arches above form a “W” for the Waterside theatre, and the fact that the character has a blue glow around him means he is close to water / sky or in name ( Waterside). Just more confirmation for the Waterside theatre.

Well I have to ask. Was this full painting in the original book? If not than anything not shown in the book should not be considered a clue. We need to take the book at face value.
Just my thoughts.

No, as I mentioned the image in the book was truncated. The painting photo was posted by late JM a couple of years ago.

One thing you should consider is the clues that have been added to the art work after the painting. It seems like there are small clues added with a sharp red pen that you'd completely miss if you use the original painting. One major one is in the middle of the breast plate area. It's clearly visible if you use a magnifying glass on the original book. It's also visible on the hi-res. scan on 12treasures.com Do not use the reconstructed image for minor detail clues since those images are heavily manipulated and altered.

This is my theory:
Pinehurst, NC 130 Cherokee Road flagpole
Pass two friends of octave in December (Two singers/actresses, Margaret Truman and Helen Hayes stayed at Pinehurst. Helen Hayes connected Margaret with James Stewart for a radio play in 1957. Helen and James starred in "Pooka" in 1970 about an imaginary friend.) Ride the man of Oz (Yellow Rose Cottage, a play on Yellow Brick Road, is on Barret Road. This road will take you to James W. Tufts Memorial Park.) There's a road that leads to dark forest where white is in color with two maps after circle and square in July and August (Eloquent way to express playing a golf tournament at Pinehurst with a course map and a scorecard.) A path becons to mica and driftwood (There is a path around James W. Tufts Memorial Park. In this park there is, or was, a driftwood horse statue.) ****Take the path around the park Under that which may be last touched or first seen standing (On a flagpole, the U.S. flag should be at the top, which is seen first, touched last when taking down.) Look North at the wing and dig to achieve by dauntless and inconquerable determination your goal. (There is a statue with arms almost at a winglike stance below the flagpole. Cannot find any information regarding the statue on-line. The "to achieve by dauntless and inconquerable determination" was about the Wright Brothers of flight. They were at Pinehurst December 4, 1915 for the Women's Golf Championship according to the Pinehurst Outlook.)
The flagpole is your destination scan around there with the GPR 35.195644, -79.468619)
Illustration findings Above the spoon in the bottom right is an outline of North Carolina. A lot of keys in this illustration, like for a hotel. Moon reflection kind of looks like a dimpled golf ball. Pinehurst Connections in illustration: Carolina Hotel designed in the form of a "T" like the knight figure. Holly Inn - Holly leaf under knight's left arm. Magnolia Inn- Hospital for Dr. Francis Owens. There is a pregnant lady figure and a cross on the knight's chest. Pinecrest Inn- The knight is resting on a garnet pinecone. Given Library - The windows are the same shape as the one behind the knight. Mystic Cottage - Represented by the column under the knight. Casino- There is a coin under the bell on the knight's left arm, third is suspending a spoon for the three meals a day served here. Chapel - There is a cross in the lower left on the wall. Woman's Exchange - Female figure again. Theater - Knight's head area is a hexagon shape. Oaks Cottage - This was also known as "The Crown". The knight's waistband is a crown. On the wall to the right side of the window bottom is the number 3, on the adjacent wall is a 5 to give you 35. Below the 5 is a 7 and an upside down 9 for 79. Church has a clock like the one in the illustration.
I used The Pinehurst Outlook for most of my research which also corresponds to the phrase "last touched, first seen". On the final page of their final issue is an advertisement for The Bank of Pinehurst. Their logo matches the left emblem on the knight's shoulder. Their logo also has a set of scales, which matches the knight's arm pose. Their logo also contains a key. After locating the building on google maps, I found the flagpole across from the old bank building. I think the casque is buried by the flagpole.

This is my first post, but I've been looking over this poem and have not seen this posted anywhere. Maybe I'm wrong.
Pass the two friends of Octave = Octave Chanute was the friend of the Wright Brothers, so Passing the Wright Bros monument at Kitty Hawk, presumably heading south. In December = December 17, 1903 was the date of the Wright Bros. first flight. Ride the man of Oz = car ferry named the Thomas A Baum (I found a picture of it by doing a google search)...I don't think this is talking about the bridge... you would ride a ferry, not a bridge.
Edit: look up the wikipedia for North Carolina Department of Transportation Ferry Division...Thomas A. Baum(the man, not the ferry) operated the first Ferry Route that ran between Manns Harbor and Roanoke Island.

Good info. Problem is if you're traveling from Wright's memorial to the Island then that ferry won't apply since the route would be on the other side of the island. True, you don't ride a bridge but if the theme is the 1st flight then perhaps ride the Tin Man of Oz in the painting that is posturing a simple plane. So a fly over would fit the theme. If so then looking for matches for birds eye view of features in the painting may help. For example chest area looks like ball fields. Needless to say you fly from one airport to another.

I believe the Thomas A Baum ferry was built in 1995, so it’s not a clue in the puzzle. Good thought though! That’s the problem with 40+ years passing, have to sort through what was and wasn’t present in the early 1980s. I agree with the Wright Brothers flight theme being part of this puzzle. One of my favourite clues is counting the raised bumps on the armor from shoulder to shoulder. You should count 8, then 5 and then 2…852 feet is how far Wilbur flew on December 17, 1903!

If you take the right side of gate and move it to the left ... It produces the wing image in the floor

By gate do you mean the window? That's how it's referred to in the verse. Why do we need to manipulate the image at all when the plumb bob is already pointing to a wing?

I did find the date of the ferry is in the 90's so I threw out that it was that exact ferry, but I'm still looking into Thomas Baum and other ferries. From some of what I've read about him, he seems to be a well know transportation innovator of the area/Dare County. The reason I'm so into this idea that the clue is telling us to ride over to the island on a ferry is because the pictures of the car ferries I'm seeing all have these structures at the top that remind me of the structures on either side of the painting that are holding up the arms of the scarecrow. After reading some of The Lost Colony play, I believe the image is representing the Native American's corn god that is described as a scarecrow. It would be nice to find out if there was a ferry that went to the island and which road it was on. I would like to have a clear line from point A to B.
Stage directions in The Lost Colony: "Placed further back in the center of the stage is the Indian corn god, fastened to a stake stuck in the ground. The outlandish figure somewhat resembles a modern scarecrow..."

Choice.. Yes The plumb Bob points to the wing in the floor.. Now if you look at the North Gate as it was in 82 and trans pose right to left it clearly matches that image.
