I like the idea of the colored caps! Thanks for sharing that. I keep thinking they are some kind of roadside markers, as you mentioned, like mile markers, but I have never seen any that have colors.
There are 26 letters in the alphabet. Is this just a coincidence?

I like the idea of the colored caps! Thanks for sharing that. I keep thinking they are some kind of roadside markers, as you mentioned, like mile markers, but I have never seen any that have colors. There are 26 letters in the alphabet. Is this just a coincidence? I could point out that there are other water related, coloured objects that function as markers... most lobster pots have floats or should, same goes for mooring bouys... they float the top end of a cable on the surface and are of course tethered to the anchor below. Think, helium balloons... a coloured bulb on the top and a string... sometimes swimming areas are set aside from boating areas.. photos around the area have lots of examples... as I think I said... we need to find something that has colours, numbers / letters, and the appearance... so none of this is likely to make sense until people are there searching around... If you look at that original clue image the 'match sticks' are coloured reddish at the top and then progress to the bottom as green... so red, orange, yellow, lime, green are what my tired old eyes see... and grouped pretty much sequentially... and following the natural sequence of a rainbow... as for 26 sticks... Look a bit to the left, there is a brown area in between those water splashes. I was looking at that and while rotating my copy of the image, I inverted that area top at the bottom and vice versa... compare that to the silhouette of a human, or at least primate spinal column. They only hint at the area that would be the coccyx, but the rest at least resembles the cervical, thoracic, lumbar and sacral vertebrae... and I started counting colours on that basis... guess what... there are a few more vertebrae than pins, but not many... lots of room to slide up or down a bit... got to thinking about how to turn the c1 to c7, t1 to t12 and so on into code... even went as far as looking at the colour blocks up top... tried taking the marker colours and numbering from left to right in each colour... that is first red box was applied with the first red VID... not sure what effect that has with relation to the dots up there.. if any. That might just end words in the text... that is first or last letter... or it might not be related at all... just saying how I started to approach it... Other objects might have other IDs on them... letters, numbers, mixed groupings... Anyway, Always having thoughts... helps to see things sometimes... I either see them or I don't at all... sometimes I shake my head... and start over... I hope to get those blue letters this session... but I'm not getting anywhere fast... but it's knowing what it is that is the mystery... I know it doesn't yield to any single shift... so there fore subject to much complexity... and not much of a sample to test. and I bet as cryptic as the others have been... fun stuff.

I am gonna take another trip to MDI to try my luck again with BOTG. With our stupid Maine winters I'm afraid it could be hidden by snow and ice and my trip would be a waste.
I think I've decipher all the noticeable cyphers except the 6 letter "reflection" on the black line. No idea about the color patches or the slanted lines on the border. I have an idea for the matchsticks but I need BOTG to check my guess.
In December with BOTG I found an actual image from the map so I figure I must be in the right area to look for the key. But I had to leave early due to high winds and freezing rain making it slippery and unsafe to continue. But I cant wait to go hunting again.
Thanks to the awesome N. Nelson for thinking up this wonderful hunt. I love that it encouraged me to get off my butt and get out and see some of the beautiful state of Maine I havent ever visited

Hello -
I am having a bit of a time with the Roman Numerals at the bottom of the page. I have got the blue text, the purple text and the numbers at the top left and the pictogram, but can't seem to figure out the Romans. I have the larger string broken down into "valid" strings, but can't make sense of it beyond that. Any ideas? Feel free to PM!

Hello all, just popping in to say its a joy to see you all still chipping away at this. Rest Assured, Nick and myself are in the background watching and enjoying the ideas you all are coming up with. Rememebr to always check the confirmation log as we are doing our best to give you guys and gals a monthly update so you know the treasure is still there. We feel this is necessary in all hunts as it makes it easier for people to justify travel cost etc... Be careful out there during this season. Happy Hunting!

Happy Hunting! will any hints ever be offered up on this if no significant movement is made in the future? Specifically a clue about those dang codes along the middle border line. Those have left me defeated and broken. I know it’s a long shot but I figured it’s worth a shot asking every couple months!

I think no "significant movement" has not been made mostly due to the weather. I would hope that before a clue is given the hunt setters allow some time to pass with some better weather.
Those ciphers are possible to solve without hints.

I will give a hint to what people are calling the "reflection cipher".
If you solved the blue words, the second blue word is what the illustration is in the grey box. Figure out what kind it is.
Apply that to QEBJWG as a key word in a popular cipher.
This will give you a location.

Thanks for the hint. Is the second "reflection" cipher similar or completely different?

Similar.
