nurturing link or connection to a spot would make it special. this link might be the story we are missing to find the chest.

Umbilical cord = teachers with ropes = string tied together in the big ball ?
All three are strikingly similar.
My guess is they are a hint to tracing a trail connected by 'nodes' at the clue locations (as opposed to drawing a big asterix on a map).
Hang on. All of those things have knots in them, don't they?

FQ posted 3/11/18 Mister Fenn– on your way to Yellowstone every summer, did you have the opportunity to stop and enjoy some of the things along the way? What were some of your most memorable stops on your road trips? JD JD, Our family of 5 did a lot of sight-seeing at 35 MPH for 1,600 miles. We always had a big canvas water bag tied on the front of the car. Periodically my father would stop on a lonely stretch and let everyone out to walk around for a few minutes, and get a cool drink. Two places we always stopped were the giant Montgomery-Wards store in Denver, and Hell’s Half Acre, between Casper and Shoshoni. Of course there were food and bathroom breaks too. Those respites were always welcome because we were 4 hot days on the road with no air conditioning and no radio. I always dreaded those long rides, especially when it was my turn to sit in the middle. f mysteriouswritings.com/mws-2018-and-2019-featured-questions-with-forrest-fenn-trip-to-yellowstone-and-other-facts/

I think you are asking good questions. I don't think Forrest makes many mistakes, though. I wasn't insinuating a mistake. My thinking was that it is in a place that cannot and will not ever be molded differently by any means. It puts national forest as top thinking. It also suggests that the land would be very difficult to develop, so likely extreme geographical features... likely not overlooking a small town
