After 28 days in total quarantine (and getting nowhere with the cipher using a variety of crappy, free online copies of what I guessed to be the book) I texted my upstairs neighbor out of curiosity/boredom and she actually had a real, live copy! Quickly located the start point, but I kept losing my place and backtracking through the actual solve, so it probably took me longer than it should have, but I cracked it. It was too tedious to wear gloves and deal with the book, so I hope the cipher doesn't give me Covid! At least I feel like I can finally catch up to everyone who seems to be flying ahead. Onto the next phase, the game is still afoot!

Glad you got it!
Yup, the key seems to be having the physical copy of the book. That’s what I meant in my hint about the way he described it which was something not easily found online. You live in the U.K., correct? That proves the U.K. version works as well.
What I did when I solved it was first used the book just enough to know I was in the right place. Then I typed it out in a Word document. It’s much easier to count by hitting the arrow keys. And I set placemarkers occasionally by changing a letter to be a different color so that I knew I had gotten up to a certain place correctly. If I started getting jibberish it meant I had miscounted so I backtracked to that colored letter.
Now you have the fun part of figuring out what it means.

The cipher clue was super clear; I figured it out right away - it took maybe ten minutes to catch up to everyone else with the provided clue map and clarification text from the video. It also helps that I drove down that stretch of road a few times in the last few years and am familiar with the area as a rockhound. I currently live in Los Angeles, CA, but I just moved into this apartment Feb 1. I also live in Tuscany, Italy three to four months every year (why I'm on EU time sometimes). I used to live in New York City for 20+ years (I'm currently subletting that apartment) and most recently resided in the Pacific Northwest for a bit, but I don't like rain. So, I borrowed the U.S. version of the book from the upstairs neighbor. But now, I get to be just as stuck on the 2nd key as everyone else! I'll work on it again soon!!!

Cipher?

Hello, I'm completely new to this board and this puzzle but I've been having a lot of fun with it. I didn't know anything like this existed online, but I might be hooked now. I'm currently working on the cipher and I haven't managed to crack it yet. I'm a programmer, so my first inclination with negative number was to count those ones from the end of the string and the positive numbers from the beginning. No luck there. Then I realized that the numbers might just be directions to count forward or backward (maybe?). Anyway, I still haven't gotten anything intelligible so I think I might be starting at the wrong point in the book. But I wanted to see if anyone could help me by ruling something out: can anyone tell me if there is any additional translation or decoding needed after the letters are identified? Like, if I'm counting from the right place will I know because I'll start getting recognizable words? Or do I have to find the letters and then decode them with a mirror cipher or something like that?
Hopefully I'm not asking for too much here! I really appreciate having these boards to come to and reading everyone else's ideas and theories. Thank you!

Hi All,
I started this hunt 4 days ago and have gotten to the cipher but am stuck. I tried to do the hunt on my own only using what Lukas provided but I couldn't do it. I have the text of the book from a website and all of the hints provided on this forum but still can't see it. I see many places where the "Best" is found. The playing card, when the object was first picked up, the first time the mirror is seen, when they "find" NF in the book, the chapter dedicated to NF, the second time the object is picked up. I like when they find NF in the book but also the second time the object is held only because it is after the black flame.
My mind is spinning now. Any hints to narrow it down would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

It has to be found by going thru black flame....so that should narrow it down to later in the book.

Thanks for the hint but I am still having issues. Going through hundreds of start characters but still not getting anything. I am using online text and am wondering if that is my issue. Or perhaps I am doing it wrong. I assume it is a simple cipher and once the starting point is known you can count forward and backward from that point in the order Lukas provided to create actual words. I have tried with spaces & without, with punctuation & without, With page numbers & without. Maybe my assumption is wrong and it is more like a running cipher counting the next position based on the last position.

Yes it's a running cipher. Please count carefully.

The starting point is much easier to find in a paper book. The pages kind of run into each other in digital format without clear breaks between the end of a page and the start of the next page. Which makes finding the starting point harder. Hint hint

I assume the font size is different, therefore leading to a different number of pages, etc.?

But I bet they’re the same amount of pages and the print is just bigger.
