Hi, first post here. I've been working on this hunt or a while on my own. I went WAY WAY the wrong direction with the surprise fortune stanza, ended up chasing the guy who found a petrified forest in his yard because a lot of things fit. I finally took a peek at this forum and got the marshal name. (Fun fact, I found my distant relative Jim Marshall in Tx before I found our man)
Ok, on to the cypher. I keep coming up with a string of real words at a few different start points. I'm working off kindle and I am able to find the correct page numbers to I think the 2013 edition. My question to those who cracked it, do the word make some sense in the order of the cypher?

Yes the words makes sense. I also used a digital form of the book, and it was very hard to find the starting place. But, once you find the right page the first part of the cipher will come out to t h e. Good Luck.

Do all characters (including spaces, quotes, em-dashes, etc) come into play for this?

Do all characters (including spaces, quotes, em-dashes, etc) come into play for this? It worked for me by ignoring punctuation

I'm confused by that. So are we looking for words per number or a letter per number? Words would make sense to ignore diacritical signs, but letters not (and will be a huge pain depending on which version you have I would assume).

Already searching the location on the street for the final key but I Was curious about across appended so I typed it into google and it came back with a book. What book you ask? biographical memoirs of st Claire county Michigan. Is this a red herring or coincidence? I don’t wanna go down that rabbit hole if I don’t have too.

You know what's interesting about the result of the cypher? There's two uppercase letters in there. That must've been done on purpose, as he could just as easily have selected lowercase ones?

I used the online book's text, so maybe there's a difference. Might've just been a red herring in my case?

I got the capital letters too. in buried and high but I haven't thought a whole lot about it, because people that used the book has mentioned it, so I think it is just the online version that using them?

Wow, you guys are fast. I tried to delete that post in time. I was off one number in my count. I see the two letters now. Not the third one though.

It's funny how many different connections I see to the cipher, but I'm sure most (all?) of them are grasping at straws.
- the word "Horlow" appears when removing spaces (Harlow?) - appended high or low (the word Ace is added above Hardware and below Dan) - high or low (Ace in a poker hand) - high or low (there is a van that says Hi next to a sign that says low) - high or low in hand (could be related to kites) - high or low in hand (key appears up high but would be smaller in hand)
