I'm curious as to what WOULD surprise people about where it was found.
Would it surprise you if it was EXACTLY 8.25 (or 8.26) miles north of Santa Fe?
Would it surprise you if none of the clues were in the search states, but 8 clues form an asterisk and the 9th clue is where those lines intersect?
Would it surprise you if each of the clues was a person - and their graves are the locations that allow you to connect the lines? I mean, Sloane is in there...so is Concy Wood, Arrowsmith (but not Rex - we don't have an X)...it's an interesting theory imho....might even include some of the Brown's from Brown and Root here in TX.
What else? Just spitballing ideas here.

People will be surprised = consider the what if's. I think people would be surprised if it was hidden in plain sight in a semi-populated well traveled area. Most people envision an isolated area of mountains, trees and beautiful smells. I'm considering alternatives. People may be surprised at who the 'I' is in the poem. What if it isn't Forrest? I would be surprised if his home in Santa Fe was his only home. Maybe the trail leads us to a place like Florida where he lived with Peggy for example, and that somehow leads us to the treasure location in the Rockies. There could be so many what if's. It's time we start considering them all. In short, nothing will surprise me at all.

Surprised: late Middle English (in the sense ‘unexpected seizure of a place, or attack on troops’): from Old French, feminine past participle of surprendre, from medieval Latin superprehendere ‘seize’.

But then I've also considered places that were downwind of a sewage treatment plant and one that was downstream from an old nuclear waste dump. Very special places (sarcasm implied even though those were real solves of mine). I don't think the eventual location will be as surprising as some of the odd solutions that have been posted on the blogs.

LOL, do you think many people would be surprised if it was found in Yellowstone? NOPE! Oh my God! Why didn't I think that it could be in Yellowstone? LOL. Yellowstone is sooo huge. It is bigger than some of the tiny new England states. Sure just go pick it up in Rhode Island. Rhode Island? Yellowstone is not exactly small.

Currently, there is a treasure hunt, going on since 2007! that is known to be hidden on Mount Desert Island, Maine....worth $10,000 ( mysteriouswritings.com/fandango-armchair-treasure-hunt-ends-thanksgiving-day-2020/ ) That island is 108 Square miles..... and no one has been able to find THAT!...... Yellowstone is almost 3500 square miles.... Not saying it is or not there, but the surprise could be 'where' 'there' in Yellowstone.... I agree it is a huge area....and that is just one small piece of the entire search area....

Here's something else to think about Jenny - even if you're within 200', the treasure could be anywhere on about 3 acres of land....that's a lot of area to cover and not nearly as close as it sounds.
500' would cover about 18 acres - in case you were curious....that's a lot of land.
