The big one. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Is it a true cipher? A red herring? It seems like the characters solve the hunt without ever considering this one. At least the other two clues are semi-comprehensible English words or phrases. Not really sure where to even start with this one. I tried letter substitutions for the numbers, separating out capital letters from lower case, skipping characters, etc. but nadatrace of anything yet.

It begins with "Et", which is the true meaning of the ampersand & in the book's title.
As well, as previously posted, another clue decoded as "The (- - - - - - ) Et". It's possible that there emphasis on "shop-pe" is to gives partial confirmation, as in "shop-et".
There is a use of the clue that includes "Sue" in it, and she is the first one to comment on it ("... cl UES topped me ...."). By using a variation on that, I get something like "poled item".
Because another clue decode ends in "et" and this plaintext begins in "et" is especially interesting, as the clues are beginning to form multiple connections.

The more I work on this one, the more I think this is a Playfair cipher. That said, though I have tried and tried, I just can't get anything to work. I'm now posting this hoping this will spark someone else who might be better at these things than I. If this post leads you to a viable answer and you are into good karma, a private message with your answer (or simply that you have found something that could work) would be much appreciated, but not expected. Part of Clue Needed (IMO):EtueIljAtulBysoj Introduction of Book: "Cool resources to help you live a happy and joyous life! Have fun, play fair, and absolutely share your stories on www.facebook.com/BreakfastTeaandBourbon." How to recognize PlayFair ciphertext?1. The ciphered message has an even number of letters. -Check2. The message may have 25 distinct letters at most (the number of letters in the grid) -Check3. It is impossible to find a bigram (back-to-back letters) composed of 2 identical letters -Check4. It is impossible that a letter is crypted by itself. -No idea what this meansOther Items to Keep In Mind that Could Possibly Guide Us:1. This clue stops Sue completely. 2. This clue gives Lane a cross word and nasty thought. A string of them. He stared at it for hours and nothing came to him. 3. Lane crosses the street when he sees a church. Sue & QB Earl go to church regularly. To me, in order to decipher this Playfair cipher (if that is indeed what it is), it likely means the keyword you need to use has something to do with religion. I've tried everything I can think of (religion, church, God, Jesus, spirit, spiritual, cross, saint, Barong, etc.) and I still haven't cracked it. Any help or guidance would be much appreciated.

Note sure I'm following. We can't confirm this until we know what the ciphered message, which is broken down into letter pairs (thus, always even). The "Et4ue..." isn't the message, it's the cipher text. The 16 letters in it are even, but again, they are the cipher-text, not the message.
Closest I can think of right now, as self-referencing in the book, is when Nels is mentioning the modular bathroom, and uses the skip 2 code, beginning with "Even now ....."
25 numbers and letters, but if I recall, only 23 in the electronic version. Since it is "at most", this would still qualify as "check".

So, my book is different. (First Edition hardcover)
The clue is: Et4ue2I2l6jA2t4ulB15ys5oj
Does this imply that the numbers are distractors and only the letters matter?

Would someone with the electronic version post Sue and Lane's words that come before and after the 23 string?
Thanks in advance.

Would someone with the electronic version post Sue and Lane's words that come before and after the 23 string? Thanks in advance. “This clue stopped me completely,” said Sue, reading “E2tue3I2l2jA2tulB5ys3oj.” “Ah!” exclaimed Lane. “Me, too. I had a cross word and nasty thought when I saw it. A string of them. I didn’t know whether it was a puzzle or whether you needed a cypher.” “I don’t even know what a cypher is,” said QB Earl. “I stared at it for hours. Nothing came to me,” added Lane. “Well?” I asked. Everyone looked at me. “Where are we going?” Lane gave an answer, very assuredly, no doubt, and he was spot on. I smiled. Everyone looked around. They smiled. Of course, given where we were, it would have been a fair guess. Still QB Earl asked, “How the hell did you get that from ‘hodaddy tsktsk pretty pie apple pie?’” “I was chanting it to myself in the shower and it just streaked into my mind. I wrote it on the shower door in the steam, and there it was staring at me, not like that other one you just read,” said Lane, turning to Sue. “E2tue3I2l2jA2tulB5ys3oj.” “And, we still have to decipher that little poem, because I haven’t figured that out,” I said. They knew what I was talking about, because it was in the stack of clues. “Just maybe it will become clear as we get near.” Sue read it aloud. You wouldn’t guess by looking at a tree, That it could eat anything other than sunshine. but as the sun shines down just north of this old town the eyes they look ahead its mouth it opens wide in darkness lips curl over the boulder it freely eats You wouldn’t guess by looking at a tree, That it could eat anything other than sunshine. Everyone froze in silence, not having the foggiest idea what it meant. Then, as if a video was taken off pause, we all agreed it seemed interesting, eagerly readied ourselves for the final drive, and chatted more about where they had gotten on their own trying to solve the puzzles and clues. They all had different takes, and everyone was so close. Perhaps had it not been so self-evident to me when I first saw it, we would have figured it out together. I guess I can be co-creative. And I guess that’s why I still thought Quarry Girl, Marie, could be on the hunt—it was so obvious to me.

Thanks, kpro.
Just to be sure, the letter in the string before the "B5" is an "l" (el), not a digit "1" (one) ?

Thanks, kpro. Just to be sure, the letter in the string before the "B5" is an "l" (el), not a digit "1" (one) ? Yes, it is definitely a lower case "L".

Thanks, troye, txth, and kpro.
Aside from the "good juju" mention, I am not finding directions to anagram to the July Jubilee Toast, but maybe Pete considers the juju hint to be enough.
