In effort to come to some sort of consensus on a state, can we list 'reasons' for Why Montana? What makes it possible, etc.... (I'll be creating a Thread for each State)

(I'll be creating a Thread for each State) I dont understand the "what state was it" discussion. We have to begin where warm waters halt. I found a WWWH in Wyoming that happened to lead me to a location in Montana. Yes, I guess I did look at Montana more than on other states. Before I found that WWWH I looked at The Grand Canyon which is located in Utah and Colorado, and I looked some in New Mexico because that is where Fenn lives now. But all his talk about West Yellowstone (MT) and how the treasure was on a place dear to him led he to look more at Montana and Yellowstone Park (which is mainly in Wyoming). That is how any investigator should be working, begin looking at the most credible suspects, if you want to increase the probability that your work pays off.

I think you answered 'Why Montana'...... it is because " But all his talk about West Yellowstone (MT) and how the treasure was on a place dear to him led he to look more at Montana and Yellowstone Park (which is mainly in Wyoming). That is how any investigator should be working, begin looking at the most credible suspects, if you want to increase the probability that your work pays off." So you found a WWWH that you liked there in the state you looked most in.. If there was a reason that led you to like New Mexico more, you probably would have had found a WWWH there.....

Hi Jenny: you already have my logic for Montana and my specific WWWH and canyon down. All of my clues are in the Treasure State. I am inclined to share my 3rd clue solution with you (off-blog) as I have with a couple others, because I think as a puzzle designer yourself you'll appreciate the cleverness behind the clue.

I think the older one gets, the more one looks back. Fenn has his home in New Mexico now, but I believe the heart of his memories lie elsewhere. That's why I would choose Montana for my starting point. This is where some of Fenn's fondest memories exist and a place he very well might want to rest beneath the stars when his time is at hand.

Jenny, the “word that is key” tells you Montana. And if you talk to Zap you will quickly realize it can only be Montana, he’s very convincing!

Thanks MiracleMan! :-) Solution could be totally wrong, but man the coincidences are outrageous.

Zap if you are wrong about clue 3, then you are brilliantly wrong! It only further confirms you’re in the right spot and have successfully solved clue 1 and 2. So yeah, I would be very very surprised to find out it’s not in Montana.

Here are a couple:
We have those two postmarks- highlighting the only duplicated location: 'West Yellowstone'...
Gallatin Forest, and other locations of Montana mentioned in TTOTC.... with childhood memories....

Similar to what Jenny said above...
1. He lived there every summer until he was 19 or 20. 2. He had an epic adventure at 16 with his best friend there in Looking for Lewis and Clark. 3. He logged for an entire summer there at Raumbaugh Creek, sleeping out ther in the wood. 4. Avalanche Lake was a “fairy-tale spot” to him in the 1940’s. 5. He caught a prize catch with Donnie on Grayling Creek. 6. He owned The Dude there.
