Most seem to think that the face of the woman in Image 1 is the Shakespeare bust, but it is a spitting image for one of the Sphinx sculptures that sit outside the de Young museum.
While the museum was built recently, the sculptures have been there much longer, surviving several renovations of that location.
If you are looking at them from the front, it's the one on the left (the one on the right's face doesn't match, but left's does perfectly in my opinion).
These Sphinx sculptures also happen to be staring directly at an unobstructed view of Sutro Tower in front of Twin Peaks.
So, perhaps Twain isn't Mark Twain but rather the old word for "two" (as in "never the twain shall meet" - Kipling). Two/twin Sphinxes staring directly at Twin Peaks, with the object being Sutro tower, and the facial match to the image as a confirmation.
I've seen this interpretation of the Twain reference, but not in relation to the Sphinxes and Twin Peaks with Sutro tower standing prominently in between. Sutro itself is made of 3 posts and also there are 2 other towers at Twin Peaks so "high posts are three" can fit in 2 ways.
An alternative or possibly double meaning is that one of the Twin Peaks is called Eureka and Twain wrote about Eureka Stockade from his travels in Australia.
If this is interpreted correctly, then the jewel is in that direction.
That view looks directly over a baseball diamond in Golden Gate Park that is very reminiscent of the shape of the Image figure's face (the bare skin area of the face), but I have no idea if that was there in 1980 or if Preiss would repeat this theme.
Another (random for now) observation:
If the reversed G and h are meant to indicate viewing the Ghirardelli sign such that it is visible in reverse, that would put us near Russian Hill Park beside the abandoned reservoir. The reservoir is currently being renovated and will reopen soon as Francisco Park. Hopefully not the location of the casque unless it is safe and sound in Russian Hill Park.
