This is somewhat 'deja vu' and yet it definitely needs consideration. Forrest does mention we must decipher the poem which does suggest there is a cipher in there to be found albeit a simple one.
What revealed it to me was the mention of his gut feeling in his 2018 Six Questions with Jenny, released in February 2018. Quote: " I have a gut feeling it will be found this summer" so what prompted this statement at this time?
The answer lay within the word 'TREASURES' itself which revealed to me that this was a cipher. It uses letter counts in their numbered position within the alphabet. You can prove it yourself.
T R E A S U R E S
20 18 5 1 19 21 18 5 19
Notice TR gives the year 2018, and if you add the rest of the word letters together you get 88. Forrest was to become 88 years old in the summer of 2018. If you consider that Forrest would have noticed this within the word 'TREASURES' at the time of publishing the poem in the book, and could release it within a veiled statement 8 years later.
I believe this cipher was to be used on words that seemed to have importance to the puzzle if your mind was open to them.
For instance 'TIME' adds up to 47 the atomic number for Silver. 'Time Magazine' was thrown in the trash. 'Catcher in the Rye' was thrown in also, although it was later retrieved but 'TIME' wasn't. The Adelaide cistern in my solution was riddled with trash and using this cipher on the word 'trash' shows it adds to 66 equating to 'ff'
The largest star on the cover of 'OUAW' relates to Adelaide from the map geometry. That large star is a Pentagram, a magical symbol which can be drawn on the Zodiac where its apex is in Capricorn. The signs its points are built on add up to 38. So if SILVER was buried within the center of the cistern Zodiac which holds water then it would have been buried in 'MUD' wouldn't it? Well by using this cipher applied to the word 'MUD' it adds up to 38 the same number the Pentagram points add up to. Believable or not? The word 'STAR' adds up to 58 which we know relates to the age Forrest contracted Cancer. If you draw the element sign to the three EARTH signs on the Zodiac wheel and then write the word 'TREASURES' around the Zodiac wheel going clockwise you will see the letters T.S.S appear at its threes points, these threes letters add to 58 and if you find the center of this element triangle you will see it is at the center of the Zodiac which relates to the center of the cistern. Mark it with a dot and you have 'Benchmark Maps' logo.
'Santa Fe' where Forrest lives also adds up to 66 and the printout of the 'Zodiac Teaching Wheel' I used to work out the ending puzzle on shows the center of the Zodiac to be 8.25 cm from its outer circumference. 8.25 miles to scale. IMO this is not all coincidence.
I believe this cipher was designed to be applied to relevant words that confirm the solution path. This is why I am a firm believer that the Silver bracelet was buried at the center of the cistern in Fremont County and with it precise instructions as to there the treasure chest was buried in 'Fremont County' in Wyoming, because to me Fremont was the link.
I don't believe Forrest's puzzle system could lead you to a specific pine tree in a forest out of many thousands, he wold have to supply you with that information IMO.
