Solution to the Treasure Hunt: THE SCARLET WOMAN
Fresh and new, a good place to start. = GREEN
Making soap to keep clean, a profession and art. = CHANDLER
Twice first, his signature did he scrawl. = HANCOCK (on the Declaration of Independence and as the first Governor of Massachusetts)
He watched a red Empire come to a fall. = NEWTON (Empire is a type of apple)
In a place of degrees, where one becomes clever, = COLLEGE
All of these places are joined together forever. = UNION
But one of seven is missing. Where could it be? = BANCROFT
On her forehead was written a name, a mystery. = This is a line from the Bible in reference to the Whore of Babylon, who sat upon the Seven Hills. She was also known as the “Scarlet Woman”, which is why she is dressed in a scarlet colored cape in the illustration.
The Scarlet Woman reminds one of the Scarlet Letter that was pinned on the character Hester Prynne for committing adultery with the minister, in the book by the same name. Hester was from Massachusetts.
The Seven Hills of Worcester, Massachusetts are listed above. Worcester is also known as the HEART. A heart can be seen in the lock of the gate.
The woman has 13 white buttons (13 = M) and 1 black button (1 = A) for MA, Massachusetts.
The woman pictured in the illustration is Anne Bancroft, who starred in “The Graduate”, her most famous role, in which she committed adultery with a young graduating college student.
There is a moon in the upper left, and a stone (rock) in the upper right = Moonstone, which is the gem prize (along with the original painting). But the rock is also where the proxy item is found. There are seven very large rocks in a semi-circle behind Bancroft Tower. The one pictured is an odd triangle shape, not like the others. That is where you can find the proxy item. Another smaller rock is placed on top of the exact spot where the proxy is hidden.
