I'm not sure if this has ever been discussed, but I might have found another message.
It basically comes down to the realization that pages 17 (proud old fop) and 40 (old lady) are linked by the roses and the number grid.
The grids, used with page 11, yield the CMASQUERADE HINT message.
I took this a little further with the realization that the image on P17 shows a house with COLUMNS and P40 image has red rose (ROWS) written on the cup.
To keep track of the various things I've tried, I called this approach P40R P17C. My approach is fully explained below.
New Code P40R P17C Explanation:
The grid from P17 indicates COLUMN
numbers.
The grid from P40 indicates the ROW
numbers.
Plot the border phrases as a matrix.
The four phrases for each page are entered as a row.
Start at the left side.
Enter one character per cell.
(Remember to include page1 - the cover)
There are 17 pages with border phrases, so the matrix contains 17 rows.
The phrases are of different lengths, so the number of columns varies.
The highest number in the P17 and P40 grids is 19.
So we only use the first 19 columns of the matrix.
Use the grid from P40 to find the row and grid from P17 to find the column.
Record the letter in the corresponding spot in the grid.
(ex: top left = Row8, Column11 = N)
The result will be a new letter grid to replace the P11 grid.
Use the numbers in the P17 and P40 grids to find the corresponding letters.
Place the numbers in order.
See that it spells out :
EDENRETNENETERNEDE
This is similar to the CMASQUERADEIN_HT_ that was revealed using the letters of the P11 grid.
This is generally taken to be: C MASQUERADE HINT
This new code appears to spell out: ENTER EDEN
I have named this new code P40R P17C
The P40R P17C code can be used on other numbers in the book.
Either the original numbers can be used or the numbers reordered to match spelling can be used.
For example - using the original order:
62-18 on the camper translates to ED-EN
1957 on the wine bottle spells EERT, backward tree.
Using the code reordered for spelling:
1653 from Neptune's chest spells EERT, backward tree.
1947 from the fire gives ENED, which can be rearranged to EDEN.
I realize the idea of EDEN is nothing new and, at least from my current perspective, does not take us further toward a more specific location. Eden is a small section on north MDI and was also the former name of Bar Harbor. And the mention of Adam and Eve in Fandango has been noted before.
But I have a sense that applying this approach and variations to other numbers might reveal something more.
Good Luck
