THE OCTOBER HUNT SOLUTION = Clues are about Mary Nasson’s grave in the Old Burying Yard in York, Maine, but the Proxy Rock was hidden across the street, as the instructions say, in the wall of a small garden next to Jefferd’s Tavern.
In this village of Old, not New = As in not New York, but Old York, Maine
Is an oddity that the curious come to view = people come to look at this strange grave
It shall shock you and stop your breath = a line from her grave stone says, ”when death shall stop my breath”
It’s a tale about an exorcist who cheated death = because she is now a ghost
A granite lintel laid across her grave = a lintel is a horizontal support of stone
The stone of a wolf put there to stave = a wolf stone is a large horizontal stone put on a grave to keep the body from rising from the dead
Off her rising from her sleep = to keep her from rising from the dead
That granite was meant her ghost to keep = same as above
But she escaped the wolf and walks these Shores = she has been seen as a ghost. Her maiden name is Shores. The location is York, Maine, which is near the shore. She escaped the wolf, as in the wolf stone.
Near borders that meet the answer is yours = York, Maine is near the border of New Hampshire
Across the road from where she haunts = Her ghost is seen in the Old York Burying ground, across Lindsey Road is a tavern
Is a garden of a place where spirits taunt = Across the road is Jefferd’s Tavern, a place where people want spirits, as in liquor, or the liquor ‘taunts’ them
What you seek is hidden there = the proxy stone is hidden in the garden at Jefferd’s Tavern
Go and get it if you dare = self-explanatory.
In the middle of the long side of a wall = the proxy is hidden in a wall. This wall has 3 sides, two are short, one side is long. The rock is approximately right in the middle of the long side.
Reach in your hand and move a rock that’s small = another rock is in front of the proxy rock
No tricks for you just be discrete = don’t fool around, just reach in there and be discrete
Remove the special bag of treats = Remove the baggies that hold the proxy rock
In the background of the poem is a watermark. It is a photo of the wall, showing the crack where the proxy rock is hidden.

Clues in the art:
The art pictured a witch in a black robe. The outline of the hood on the right was of part of the state of Maine. Where there was a drop of blood on the skull, that would be approximately where Old York, Maine is located.
The skull is that of a wolf, for the the wolf stone. This links the art to the poem.
The branches were in the shape of a pentagon, often associated with witches. The branches were often put like this so that herbalists could dry their herbs by hanging them off of the branches.
The two herbs pictured are Nightshade on the left and Valerian both of which are used for sleep. Mary Nasson is in effect, sleeping.
In the leaves of the herbs is a Polybius Code. It says, “HERBALIST”. In the flowers of the herb on the right, it says, “MARY”.
The gem that was chosen to be the prize for this treasure hunt was an 18 carat cabochon Pink Rose Quartz that came from Africa. When doing some research on which gems witches would use/like, I found that quartz is the most versatile of crystals, making it a witch's greatest companion. As the name suggests, this quartz crystal has a rose or pink hue, making it perfect for spells and rituals involving emotions, especially love. Use it to attract romance, affection, and friendship, bring soothing, healing energy to your home, diffuse situations, and bring peace to those fighting or suffering a great loss.
