Something I've noticed, want to see if anyone sees anything out of it.
1) Tom hanging his lights on October 30th = 10/30 = 1030
2) Looking for the treasure, they go 840 steps, then 190. 840+190 = 1030
3) He talks about 1022 ancestors
4) The book was released at 17:08 ... the 1028th minute of the day.
I think there was something else in that range but I can't remember at the moment. But that's 4 numbers in the range of 1022-1030.
Closest thing I've come up with is a few very close small highways in Baton Rouge, which is 80 miles from New Orleans, which could be their first stop 80 miles away. I don't think this is the case, but that's all I can come up with for these numbers.

As someone I'm partnering with that is very smart has already said to me, if it is New Orleans, i challenge you to show me a rock quarry 80 miles away from it to go to. After trying to prove him wrong, I still can't. 1010 is all over the book, as well.

My thought process is that the mileage to the towns are correct, but none of the stuff they experienced on the way (Bob's, the stone tower, etc) are things we are looking for. I think we are looking for clues to the cities and the route in the backstories, or other information such as the recipes. This is my strategy for a New Orleans based solve, at least. Other starting points I'm considering are possibly using quarries for the solve. Who knows.

My understanding is that the first 3/4 of the book hints at a city and the actions taken in the last quarter reveal how to find the treasure. I don't think the starting location of the group is important. I don't think the purpose of describing the journey and the mileage of all the stops on the way to the city is for us to be able to track where they go from location to location - I think it's strictly to hint at a city. I could be wrong but that's just the vibe I get.
I've also looked all over NOLA for 'rock formations' or 'rock narrows' (lol). Closest thing to a rock formation I've found is at the City park put-put golf course.
It's nice OP has come up with more 10-x numbers. I've always wondered why the exact time of the start of the hunt was given. Maybe street addresses?

Also, this is a good pickup on the number range by thetictocman. It's a bit confusing, because if we are to believe what Pete has said, we are to do what the characters do, once arriving at the spot.
So, the 840 + 190 paces. ("get accounting")
Maybe the clues have dual meanings. Also, may it's the range (1022 - 1030) = 8 or 9, depending on whether inclusive or not.
