I was on to the "ly" adverbs based on the Chap 4 title, but was trying to use adverb-subject-verb pairings. What there anything to suggest looking at the "ing" words? I think "A kingly reward!" was the internal clue...K-ING-LY. "SpeakING confidentialLY" in the Chapter 2 clue was another hint.

Agree with Calvin's two examples pointing to ING above, but will add that the process itself also seems to point to ING. I found it very clever that LY words alone formed "G_IFFIN" and "FOUNT_IN." Once you get there, you can see that the only possibility to make GRIFFIN is "Rambling" and one of the few options for FOUNTAIN is "Amazing." Granted this wasn't enough to get my friend and I on the right track in time, but I can see in hindsight how I should have been clued into alternating. Very clever how GRIFFIN and FOUNTAIN are reformed with new words once you start alternating LY and ING. Which brings me to 'tip 4' IMO. A few people have pointed out LY and ING together. Wouldn't you say Phutz was Lying? Certainly more of a confirm that you're doing the right thing than a way to get there, but everything helps with puzzles of dozens of seemingly correct options

A few people have pointed out LY and ING together. Wouldn't you say Phutz was Lying? Certainly more of a confirm that you're doing the right thing than a way to get there, but everything helps with puzzles of dozens of seemingly correct options I agree with you here. It was only when I saw LY and ING together on the board that I realized together they spelled “LYING”; so the solution being LY and ING alternating spells LYING throughout the chapter. I didn’t get it at the time but now that I see it coupled with the Phenwick story in the character’s dialogue - I think it’s the most clever code in the book.
