My final guess for the location of the golden key is the BEAR DEN off the park loop road. Although I searched it thoroughly, I might have still missed it or the key might have already been found but not reported. I believe this because there are many references to BEAR and DEN throughout the book. Moreover, it appears that the colors RED and YELLOW point to important clues.
My page by page evidence is:
Cover: Can be folded so the key lies under a rock seam that resembles a BEAR DEN.
Pg 5 illustration:
There is a bear right there in the picture in front of RED and YELLOW flowers. Several pages can be folded to form RED and YELLOW compass stars, indicating that RED and YELLOW items point the way to clues.
Fandango is seated in front of what looks strikingly like the BEAR DEN.
The multi keys on the tree, the snake, the hare, and the leaves are all directing attention toward the DEN.
Pg 7 illustration:
Can be folded to say DEN on top and it is the only page with RED and YELLOW on the outside border.
Pg 11 illustration:
On the so-called "key page" is the word DEN in hidden.
The YELLOW clock face next to the RED flower and RED letter E references late August, which is Virgo.
Virgo is located on the tip of the key.
In native American zodiac, the animal for Virgo is the BEAR.
The Big dipper is Ursa Major – and Ursa means BEAR.
Pg 15 illustration:
No references. There are no reds or yellows within the border, so nothing important.
Pg 17 illustration:
The house shows COLUMNS and there are COLUMNS in a newspaper.
There is a RED ROSE next to a YELLOW flower on the kettle and in the vase.
This image gives clues that a grid of ROWS and COLUMNS is important in solving the puzzle.
Use of the border words and number grids on p17 and p40 reveals the message ENTER A DEN.
Pg 19 illustration:
DMS is abbreviation for degrees-minutes-seconds of map coordinates.
The 62-18 on license plate equals 44, the latitude of MDI.
The 1927614 are part of the GPS coordinates to the hiding spot.
There is a teddy bear in the window of the camper and is surrounded by RED and YELLOW to signify the importance.
The importance of RED and YELLOW is confirmed by the finding that this page can be folded to form a four-pointed RED and YELLOW “compass” star.
The page can be folded another way to show FOLD on the top, which serves as confirmation of the earlier folding of pg7 to show DEN.
There is color in a few of the tree leaves to indicate it is early fall, or VIRGO.
Text on pg 20:
Contains the phrase - “So I could DROP the goods and find a DEN”.
Pg 23 illustration:
The lobsterman is dressed in RED and YELLOW and the letters on his shirt can be arranged to THE BEAR.
The numbers on the buoys are part of the GPS coordinates.
The lobsterman says “listen heah”.
In real life, the shack with the buoys is in Bernard, perhaps he says it to sound like “BEARnard”.
Pg 26 illustration:
The fairy with RED and YELLOW on the outfit and pointing to the KEY on the ground has Virgo displayed prominently.
Virgo, as noted before, is reference to BEAR.
Pg 30 illustration:
Shows map coordinates for MDI; 44N and 68W. Those numbers are in RED and YELLOW.
The strange fold on the map indicate that certain pages must be folded. Five pages fold to reveal the RED and YELLOW stars similar to the pg 56 star.
This page folds to reveal a four-sided Red-Orange-Blue-Yellow star.
His compass is backward and indicates that certain letters or numbers must be rearranged to yield the hint – such as what we did with the lobsterman’s shirt and the PAEC Forty south hint.
The YELLOW book has letters that could spell every RED.
Pg 32 illustration:
This references that the Native American sign for Virgo is BEAR.
There may be a very subtle hidden image of a BEAR by Chief’s left shoulder, with the area under the bridge to resemble a DEN.
Pg 34 and 35 illustration:
The eyes in the sky may be the face of the BEAR.
The statue’s fingers flash 21, which is part of the coordinates.
Pg38 text:
…fields of flowers (reference to ROWS) …groaning towers (reference to COLUMNS) …at the BORDERS (to indicate the border words are used to form a table of ROWS and COLUMNS.
Pg39 text: …set me at a sunny TABLE.
Pg40 illustration:
There is a RED ROSE next to a YELLOW ROSE outside her window and RED ROSE is on the label on her tea bag.
The numbers are used as the ROW numbers combined with the COLUMN numbers of corresponding positions on page 17 to find the letter from the border words table.
There are berries (BEARies) taped to the wall.
The wheat points to 16 and 5 (=21) which is part of the GPS coordinates.
The colors RED and YELLOW make orange. The orange numbers are 19 and 3 to indicate the grids from pgs17 and 40 go together (each position adds to 19) and the numbers can be used to form a third grid of coordinates.
Pg44 and 45 illustration:
There is an image of a BEAR in the lower right corner.
Three signs end with 18: Roque Island, Ellsworth, and Bass Harbor.
The license plate can substitute the numbers (131491) for letters to spell ACADIA.
The numbers 31491 sum to 18, so this is a fourth sign that ends in 18.
Take the first letter of each and you have BEAR.
The different color signs spell RED, YELLOW, BOOK – indicating that the colors RED and YELLOW are key throughout the book.
The dice on the mirror show two ones, or 11, which is part of the GPS coordinates.
Pg47 illustration:
This is another page that can be folded to form the four-pointed RED and YELLOW star.
The letters ABRE are together and can rearrange to BEAR.
The red letters are R, A, R, O, and B for B(ear) ROAR.
Pg51 illustration:
There is an image of a BEAR in the white clouds and the key in the gray clouds is pointing to it.
The page can be folded so the right border says At End, which can be rearranged to AT DEN.
With this fold, the E of east resembles the end of a key.
Pg55 illustration:
There is an image of a BEAR in the upper right cloud.
Draw a line from the puddle key to the clouds and it points right to it.
Pg56 map:
BEAR island is labeled and all four winds are blowing in its direction.
The Border Word Grid:
See the thread “Maybe a new number code” for detailed explanation.
Basically, letters are ordered in the same manner as the CMASQUERADEINHT. But instead of the letters of pg11 grid, the letters come from the border word table with ROW numbers from p40 and Column numbers from p17.
Ordered it spells ENTER A DEN.
PAEC FORTY SOUTH: It is 40 paces from the parking pull off (Sols Cliff Overlook) to the BEAR DEN off the park loop road.
GPS Coordinates:
The GPS coordinates of the BEAR DEN are 44.36 and -68.1927614.
The 44 and 68 come from various places in the book and it is no secret the island falls in those degrees. The .1927614 comes from the camera lens. The .36 comes from the buoys. Those decimal values convert to 44 21.671 and 68 11.565. The 21 comes from the fire statue and pg40 grid (top middle numbers indicated by the wheat). The 11 comes from the dice and the so-called “key page” being page 11.
Of course - I also had 100% confidence that the Fenn treasure was in New Mexico.
Hope the answer comes out soon.
