That IS an interesting find. There are a few "key" points in those articles.
Although he says the key is a token, he also notes that "its value is in where it is located".
He also said that he developed a teacher's guide "so the book can be used to study literary analysis". It would be really cool if we could find that guide! But we don't know Duck Miller's real name.
Something else he said that was interesting is that he is interested in culture. The book came out in the early 2000s, right? Perhaps some of the stories have cultural references.
And why is the shadow of the Whistle Pig sideways in that article?!
I haven't picked up that book for several years. But I have always liked the stories. One of these days, I will open it up again. It would be nice if we could get a large group of people to discuss the Whistle Pig.

I used to think the "key" is only visible from a specific vantage point, like the shape of a feature in the landscape. But if it is truly a location-specific token, I would lean towards an arcade or perhaps a transit system which once required the purchase of a physical token to enter.
