"I’m sure I will go alone in there again in the future and appreciate its beauty anew. Forrest didn’t make it back to his special place in his final hour. But when I go back some day to lie down beneath those towering pines, tilt my hat over my face to shield against the bright sun, and drift off into one more afternoon nap in that serene forest in the wilds of the Cowboy State, I know he will be resting there next to me." (Jack Stuef - Medium)
Jack said he thought he may have been the only one to notice the few slips made to reporters by FF. Not sure of that, but Jack may have slipped himself in his statement above.
Q: Would a solo searcher drift off into one more afternoon nap in grizzly country?
IMO, Jack found Indulgence about 1 mile up Soldier Creek from its confluence with the Encampment River in the Sierra Madres of southern WY. The Sierra Madres - “Mother Mountains” - are grizzly free.
I believe the search area is The Encampment River Canyon Wilderness Area; it's a very Fenny place.
BIWWWH - Start your quest at the Continental Divide
ATIITCD - Follow the Encampment River Trail down the Encampment River Canyon
NFBTFTW - a little short of 10 miles (total trail length is about 16 miles)
PIBTHOB - Here's where imagination comes in, I believe. The HOB is an old dude ranch now called the Water Valley Ranch (WVR). It has a stocked fishing pond. Brown is capitalized by FF to represent the last name (a pejorative term) for the East Coast cowboys who frequented those places. At this point in your quest, you've got to get off the trail and cross the Encampment River at its confluence with Soldier Creek which lies just below the WVR. (From the first clue, I think halt may have been the word to focus on. It's military jargon similar in mien with quest and cease. He used these words to serve as a clue that you are correct if you've chosen Soldier Creek as your creek.)
FTINPFTM - You're off trail now and up into the Wilderness Area following the Soldier Creek drainage.
TEIEDN - You have to go up, around, and to the left three times, just shy of 1 mile from the confluence, to get around the three hills and to the blaze's location. Use Google Earth and put yourself near the river's elevation and look up Soldier Creek. You'll see what he meant by having to be an Architect. He needed to describe the terrain you would encounter to know you were in the right place so you could walk with great purpose.
TBNPUYC - Soldier Creek is very shallow.
JHLAWH - Hog Park Reservoir is on the Divide and serves as a feeder for Soldier Creek. The Encampment River Trail starts on the CDT at the southern end of Hog Park Reservoir.
IYBWAFTB - Not sure what the damaged blaze is...need BOTG
LQDYQTC - It was 15' below the blaze on the ground in a knook near the one small section of this creek that does not lie in the Wilderness Study Area - this section is under BLM in the Medicine Bow/Routt National Forest. (I wonder if FF had any influence with Alan Simpson and Richard Cheney when they drew up those boundaries back in the early 90's?? It seems a rather arbitrary decision to leave that section of the creek out of the Wilderness Area when all of the rest of it is inside. But if FF knew he wanted to be buried there, being in a Wilderness Area would be a problem...not so much in a national forest.)
BTSWMG - Not sure of significance of this phrase... I have made the mistake of projecting my idea of a marvel gaze (high snowy mountains) in each of my other solves; but it's his rainbow, not mine. So, who's to say what counts as marvelous? Or, this phrase just means don't sit there and skylark at your riches for too long.
JTTCAGIP - A straight forward statement to carry on and not be an asshole?
The Encampment River Canyon Wilderness Area is the smallest and least visited Wilderness Area in the state. It's a hunter's and fisher's paradise. And I believe it's the end of FF's rainbow.
BTW, The WVR is at the end of the road from Encampment, is plowed year round, and is for sale.
