Legend Has It ~ Dead Man's GoldDead Man's Gold (Arizona) PRODUCT DETAILS from website: (link above) Disclaimer: This legend is a creative work of fiction but the hunt, the competition, and the reward are REAL. Legend has it many years ago in the Territory of Arizona a great treasure was discovered, stolen and lost not once but twice in the same morning. Its general whereabouts were a closely guarded secret held by a few men who attempted multiple times to recover it, but all in vain. Over time their story passed into local legend and gradually faded from memory: until now. In the summer of 2020, an old bottle was discovered near the bank of the Gila river 70 miles upstream of Yuma, AZ. The bottle contained aged, water-damaged pages. Although illegible at first, after careful cleaning and digital restoration, most of the writing became clear. The recovered text sheds new light on the nearly forgotten legend... Update: On the May 1st journal entry, the town name is Yuba (was previously written as Yuma).

I am beginning to have my doubts about this treasure hunt.
The prize is a cash prize. It began with $500 that the creators contributed. And the prize pool increases with each purchase of the hunt. One of their rules is that after you purchase the hunt, you have to wait three weeks before you can submit a valid solution. This is because those three weeks are considered a "preparation period". While you are waiting, the amount that you paid for the treasure hunt is put on hold. Once the three weeks pass, the amount you paid is added to the treasure chest, or the prize amount.
Here is how it is worded on their website:
NEW CONTRIBUTIONS APPEAR IN THE "PENDING INCREASE" DURING THE PREPARATION PERIOD, AFTER WHICH THEY ARE TRANSFERRED TO THE TREASURE CHEST (SEE THE FAQS). VALUES UPDATED DAILY.
Just a little over three weeks ago, on April 15th, Cowlazars had a YouTube show about Legend Has It and their debut hunt. During the show, quite a few people made purchases. I have been watching the prize amount to see how much will transfer over and increase that treasure chest prize amount. IT HAS NOT INCREASED. They say the values update DAILY. The value has not changed. It has been at $810 plus $1240 pending. The amount that is in the pending should have significantly decreased and the amount in the treasure chest should have greatly increased as of May 6th.

The prize did get updated, and I received an email in answer to my inquiry. They said that they had no internet access and were not able to update the amount.

Hello! It's great to be here!
Looking forward to discussing Dead Man's Gold with everyone, but we first wanted to thank all of those who've joined our hunt and for the many wonderful comments we've received. Creating this treasure hunt sure was an adventure, but seeing so many others having an adventure of their own with Dead Man's Gold has been more rewarding than we anticipated.

Congrats to the solver & finder!!
I joined this hunt right after the Cow Lazar interview. I was amazed how much effort Nate & Andy put into this fun challenge. Honestly, I don’t know why more people didn’t participate in this. I really hope Nate & Andy continue these hunts. I really think they have the right formula, and the right passion to make this into something really big.
I was planning to go BOTG in August with my daughter, right before dropping her off for her first year in college at ASU. Looks like someone beat us to our spot.
Our solve led us to: Santa Teresa Mountains -> North Santa Teresa Wilderness -> Grand Enchantment Trail -> Holdout Canyon -> Black Rock, where I believe the Key is located: 32.942530°, -110.196347°
We didn’t spend a great deal of time on our solve, but we saw some things in history that pointed to: 1. The Power family – composed of "Old Man" Jeff, the father, his wife, Martha, three sons; Charles, John, and Tom, and one daughter; Ola May. 2. They were known being part of the second most famous shootout in AZ, 2nd to the O.K. Corral shootout. 3. The Power brothers, Tom and John, had a friend from CA named Tom Sisson who helped John with an unsuccessful mining claim. 4. Klondyke was the town that Tom started his journey, after leaving the Power’s ranch. 5. After Klondyke, north turn up the canyon, stops for the night here: 32.906287°, -110.302809° 6. Resumes his journey, ultimately meets up with the Grand Enchantment Trail, passes Holdout Canyon, gets shot, races down to Black Rock, hides the gold, makes his way to the Gila River before dropping the bottle & message in the river. 7. An alternate location near Black Rock we wanted to BOTG included the ghost town of Spenazuma, which is right in front of Black Rock.
Anyway, this was a lot of fun, and we learned some history of Arizona along the way.
Thanks for the adventure!

I worked with a group on this hunt. We are all really curious to find out what the solution is.
Here is what we came up with as our solution.
According to the narrative, the main character travels to meet his friend, “John G” in Arizona Territory. After reading the details of the journal, we have determined with 100% certainty, that John G is John Peter Gabriel who owned a bar in Florence and also owned the Monitor Mine.
Another clue speaks of an “enchanting” land, which we believe is a reference to the “Grand Enchantment Trail”. Along with that comment, came a sketch, which we have not been able to positively identify, but believe it must be a view from the Grand Enchantment Trail.
When the main character gets shot, he sees a rock formation that looks like a church. But one big clue is that he has the “morning sun warming his face”. This must mean that he is facing east in order to see this rock formation. Besides the clues in the pdf journal, the creators of this treasure hunt have said that the treasure is in a remote area and the precise location can not be seen by google earth, and there are no photos of it on the internet. They said that they believe people do not know about this location. We believe the treasure was hidden in the area of Dale's Butte. Because Dale’s Butte really is not an official name, you can not locate it on a map or on google earth. It is in a remote area, which goes along with what the creators of this hunt have said.
The Grand Enchantment Trail and the Arizona Trail (AZT) share the same path, and this is right around the area of Dale’s Butte, or around AZ #16.
We did have someone go BOTG for us, but unfortunately, a lot of the trails in that area were closed due to fires. They did a quick search in the area of Dale's Butte on the Grand Enchantment Trail, but it did not look like the terrain in the photo. The fires lasted for a very long time during the summer causing many trail closures. We could not get someone to go again. We feel like we were in the right area, but just needed more BOTG searching on the Grand Enchantment Trail to match the terrain.
One also has to take in consideration the clues of where the bottle landed after it made its way down the Gila River. The position of the treasure has to be such that the bottle would make it to the destination mentioned in the pdf.

Question: Did anyone figure out what the blurry words meant in the diary? Or the dates?

I used the dates (1893) to find old maps. The most useful of these were railroad maps. Based on a departure from Santa Barbara, I figured Thomas was probably on the Southern Pacific rail line. I then searched for stops that start with "P", based on where the lady on the train was getting off. I thought Pantano was most likely, so Thomas would have gotten off two stops later at Benson (again, based on the maps I found). I realize, it's possible that the lady wasn't getting off at a stop that starts with "P", but rather was getting off to take another train, and could have been headed to Phoenix or Prescott. Based on distances someone could ride in a day, I thought that maybe Thomas would have gone from Benson to Tombsone, the location of the OK Corral shootout. This seems to be validated by a reference to "defying doctors". Doc Holladay was one of the gunfight participants. However, here is where the trail goes cold for me. After leaving John G., Thomas "turned north up the canyon". As far as I can tell, you can't really go North up a canyon out of Tombstone. So it seems my location may be wrong. Further complicating things, I have searched satellite views for a canyon with an impassable pool, followed by *a pool at the top* (why does water pool at the TOP of a canyon?). I have found nothing. These pools have confounded me completely. Instead, I just ignored that part and calculated distances and headings based on the dates in the journal. If Thomas goes North out of Tombstone for a day, and then rides on a heading of 301.5 degrees for 3.5 days, I think he'd end up somewhere West or Northwest of Tucson. There are some washes and mountains in that area that could potentially match the sketch. Interestingly, on one of my old maps, I found a location labelled "Cathedral Rock" between Mt. Lemmon and Mt. Kimball (32.386990, -110.829236). If I were confident enough to go BOTG, I certainly would have hiked to this location to check it out. But, because of the problems around Tombstone (canyon locations, lack of pools) I just wasn't confident enough to buy a plane ticket. If you're interested in my thought process, I tracked it all in a Google doc here: docs.google.com/document/d/1fXc7YwEeuQLfCjiXkoXCvYutb2zYmJH3kEa6t2_W2wI/edit?usp=sharing

Our solve led us to: Santa Teresa Mountains -> North Santa Teresa Wilderness -> Grand Enchantment Trail -> Holdout Canyon -> Black Rock, where I believe the Key is located: 32.942530°, -110.196347° I really like your solution. The location looks much more fitting than mine does. 2. They were known being part of the second most famous shootout in AZ, 2nd to the O.K. Corral shootout. This is a good theory, but I'm uncertain about the dates. The journal ends in 1893 and this shootout took place in 1918. Not sure how much dates matter to the puzzle though? 5. After Klondyke, north turn up the canyon, stops for the night here: 32.906287°, -110.302809° I LOVE that your solution found a town with a canyon to the north and a pool at the top. Excellent work. I wonder if BOTG would find an impassable pool anywhere? I had a lot of trouble trying to figure that part out. 6. Resumes his journey, ultimately meets up with the Grand Enchantment Trail, passes Holdout Canyon, gets shot, races down to Black Rock, hides the gold, makes his way to the Gila River before dropping the bottle & message in the river. The clues say he was 301.5 degrees from the first mark on his map. While I really like your start and finish locations, I'm getting hung up on that heading. Anyhow, thanks so much for sharing your research! I found it fascinating and wish you the best of luck in the next hunt!
