Thank you for this. It feels like such a better answer than the OK Corral. Gabriel in this story definitely "defies doctors!"

Question: Did anyone figure out what the blurry words meant in the diary? Or the dates? Nope, I tried but couldn't figure out any of the blurry words.

This is a good theory, but I'm uncertain about the dates. The journal ends in 1893 and this shootout took place in 1918. Not sure how much dates matter to the puzzle though? Yes, I had much difficulty lining up dates. The closest date for my solve area (general area) was related to the Apache Kid, who frequented the Aravaipa area, and was reportedly shot there in 1893. Other than that, I couldn't find a match. I concluded that pseudo-history was part of this puzzle, and dates didn't need to line up. 301.5 degrees was very troubling to me. The best I could figure out was that the true heading from Holdout Canyon to a significant dirt road turn prior to the water (first map mark) is 301.5 degrees. The opposite of 301.5 degrees is also 121.5, which is the emergency frequency for pilots - not sure if that relates somehow - but it doesn't fit my solve. Good luck to you as well. I enjoy these, so I hope Nate & Andy do more of these. Milan

Very cool. I know both of them personally (since high school, actually). It sounds like they have at least two more in the works right now. Supposedly they have an announcement to make tomorrow on the Cowlazars youtube channel. I'm hoping it's the start date of the next hunt.

I worked with a group on this hunt. We are all really curious to find out what the solution is... Very cool. Your group was on the right track. I remember hearing about a zoom-call with CowLazars, but I couldn't figure out how to join that discussion. My daughter and I definitely had confirmation bias because we tried to get the "Enchantment Trail" to fit, and we really loved the Aravaipa area. We were planning a BOTG trip in August - we might just go there anyway because it looks beautiful. Anyway, I look forward to the Nevada Triangle

I don't participate in the zooms, neither does anyone in my group.
We just did a lot of research using old Arizona Territory maps and articles like the one I posted.
I thought that the blurred out words might be some sort of code, and spent a lot of time on that, but it doesn't appear that was the case.

We (our team) felt like the treasure would be along the Grand Enchantment Trail too. I'm not sure why that was put in there. I don't care for when treasure hunts intentionally put red herrings into their hunts, especially if they are botg hunts. Searchers spend money to travel to these places, so putting in a red herring to lead someone to the incorrect location is not okay in my book.
The creators have asked for our suggestions...
The creators have said that they do not want to post the solution just yet, and have asked for us to post ours. I think that is their way of seeing where we went wrong. I would rather they just post the solution. The hunt is over. We want to know the answer.
I would also like to see more about the winner. Who is he? Has he been doing treasure hunts for a long time? How many botg trips did he make? I saw his name, but he is no one that I recognize from the forums. It would be nice to hear from him, or about him.
The one brother said that the treasure was found earlier than they announced because he couldn't be reached by phone since he was camping. But the other brother seemed to know that it was found, he was just trying to get in touch with the second brother. If this is a botg hunt, and the proxy or treasure chest is found, it should be announced immediately. Again, searchers could be wasting time and money traveling to the area to search. If you are running a hunt, there has to be a way to contact you. Why wasn't the other brother allowed to announce it was found?
I did enjoy the history, and that you had to dig deep to find what you were looking for. And once you found it, there were small confirmers to let you know that you were on the correct track, such as the comment about the snakes.
Maybe I will have more remarks once the solution comes out. But for now, that is all I have.

Some of you may have seen our latest interview with Cowlazars on his channel (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FvGwg4OoNXM) in which we discuss the solution to the first half of DMG and we discuss the sponsorship program. We also made a stand-alone video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nbQ_JCYp2bA) going over the first half of DMG. We will be releasing the solution to the second half soon!

Perhaps we weren't clear enough on the interview, but within minutes of me seeing the email I announced it on our website and closed the hunt. I was bursting with excitement but couldn't even tell Andy about it for several more days!

It seemed as though on the Cow interview, you wouldn't announce it until you got in touch with your brother. Thanks for clarifying.
It would be nice to hear from the winner...even if it were just a post. Was this his first treasure hunt? How many botg trips did he make? Does he participate in any forums?
Still awaiting the solution...

I'm excited to see part 2 of their solution video. I'm hoping the solution ends up following the Grand Enchantment Trail, somehow.

It would be nice to hear from him, or about him. In answer to your comment on red herrings, no this was not a red herring. Instead it was our way of alluding to the area the horizon was in. The Grand Enchantment trail no doubt has it name originating around the Superstition mountains. It's a common naming convention for the area and we felt it appropriate to mimic that. In fact, here's a little easter egg for you that I believe we failed to mention in our videos... The south face of the small canyon were Thomas was standing when we drew his horizon sketch is the boundary of the current-day Superstition Wilderness. By saying it was an enchanting place, we were alluding to the fact that the mountains in the sketch were in fact within the Superstition Wilderness. More of a fun fact really. To answer your second question, we did invite Michael Frans to join us in a video interview or comment online and share his solve. However, he was not interested in doing so and instead sent us a pdf detailing his solve. This is the same pdf we share in part 2 of our solution. And thank you for your suggestions artofhiddenmessages. We accept and value each one!

youtu.be/GgQG4MqNslkThe final solution has been posted. I feel that the first half was good. It followed historical records and maps. But the second half was a bit convoluted. The 301 degrees clue gives a direction but not a distance. A person really would not have known where the next "turn" should be. The drawing was not much help. A lot of the 2nd half of the solution would have been guess work, with no real confirmers, just trial and error until you found the treasure. The pools were possibly a confirmer/hint. But this area is dangerous. It would have been best to avoid this area. I didn't like the inclusion of "enchanting", because of the close proximity of the Grand Enchantment Trail. You say it wasn't an intentional red herring, but if you are researching that area, you would know of the trail's existence. It was very misleading. I thought there might be some codes and ciphers in the text, but apparently there were not. What was the reason for the text that was "erased"? Good job for a first time treasure hunt. But there is some room for improvement.
