youtu.be/GgQG4MqNslkThe final solution has been posted. I feel that the first half was good. It followed historical records and maps. But the second half was a bit convoluted. The 301 degrees clue gives a direction but not a distance. A person really would not have known where the next "turn" should be. The drawing was not much help. A lot of the 2nd half of the solution would have been guess work, with no real confirmers, just trial and error until you found the treasure. The pools were possibly a confirmer/hint. But this area is dangerous. It would have been best to avoid this area. I didn't like the inclusion of "enchanting", because of the close proximity of the Grand Enchantment Trail. You say it wasn't an intentional red herring, but if you are researching that area, you would know of the trail's existence. It was very misleading. I thought there might be some codes and ciphers in the text, but apparently there were not. What was the reason for the text that was "erased"? Good job for a first time treasure hunt. But there is some room for improvement. The pools were possibly a confirmer/hint. But this area is dangerous. It would have been best to avoid this area.
The pools were definitely a confirmer for me. I agree that that area could be dangerous, but it wasn't necessary to actually go there BOTG since you can see the pools on Google Earth and the are well documented other places online.
"The 301 degrees clue gives a direction but not a distance. A person really would not have known where the next "turn" should be. The drawing was not much help."
Yeah, this part stumped me for a while too. I wasn't sure how far Thomas would have traveled in the few days after he left his first campsite at the small pool, but I knew it could be many miles. I kind of approached it from the viewpoint of the creators of the hunt. For safety reasons, I personally wouldn't want searchers roaming the desert along the length of the 301.5 degree line, looking for an area that matched the sketch. So I figured they created the sketch close to a road that was safe to travel by the average person driving a car. That's how I ended up looking at where the 301.5 degree line intersected with the Apache Trail road. The drawing ended up being a huge help, probably the most important clue, since I was able to 100% confirm I was at the correct location.
"I didn't like the inclusion of "enchanting", because of the close proximity of the Grand Enchantment Trail"
I thought about that too, but I had to remind myself that the journal entry was written in 1893 and the Grand Enchantment Trail wasn't created until 2003... so I ended up ruling it out.
"What was the reason for the text that was "erased"?"
I took a very close look at the washed out text in Photoshop using various filters, etc. and was never able to see anything legible. I ultimately figured it was just there to add to the overall narrative and mystery of the legend.

Hey guys, this is Mike. I'm the person who solved the Dead Man's Gold treasure hunt. Happy to answer any questions you may have about the solution. Hello! And welcome to the forum! I hope we will see you actively participate in other treasure hunts. Was this your first treasure hunt? If not, what other hunts have you done? How many botg trips did you make before you found this treasure? Do you plan on doing their next hunt?

How many botg trips did you make before you found this treasure? Do you plan on doing their next hunt? I was pretty active trying to solve Forrest Fenn's treasure hunt for several years, which is how I ended up hearing about this hunt. I saw Legend Has It discussing Dead Man's Gold on Cowlazars YouTube channel and decided to give it a try since I only live a couple hours away in Tucson, AZ.
I only did two BOTG for this hunt. The first one was a bust since I encountered the gov't no trespassing sign which made me scrap the plan to go down the north canyon. The only other option after that was the canyon to the west (Crucifix Canyon), which ended up being the correct location.
Yes, I'll definitely sign up for the Nevada Triangle hunt. Since I live in AZ, I'm not too far away. Can't wait... should be a lot of fun.

Hey desertcloak ! Welcome, and congrats on the solve. I'm looking forward to the Nevada Triangle hunt as well. I feel this one was good and having the solution will help us understand the mindset of Nate & Andy. They're definitely more literal than I was expecting. I had misunderstood a previous statement and believed that *none* of the people in the story were real, when in fact only Thomas Clark was fictional.

Hey vermillion! The funny thing is that I never figured out who "John G." was. I knew about the shootout in Florence, but I never made the connection. I basically bypassed all of the history related to John G, thinking he was a fictional character as well.
I ended up focusing on Ray, AZ since it was the only town within a days horse ride from Casa Grande (a long ride) that also would have had a saloon and a northerly canyon leading away from the town.
