Solution to the ALL FOR ONE AND ONE FOR ALL hunt: The Tunisian Modern Pentathlon team at the 1960 Olympics.
Three men had to compete in five events:
Three men had to compete in five events:
-Swimming, where one of them almost drowned.
-Equestrian, where all three fell off their horses.
-Pistol shooting, where one almost shot a judge.
-Running, which they managed to do.
-And finally fencing, where each member was supposed to compete. Only one of them could fence, so they kept sending him out, hoping no one would notice. They were caught and disqualified.
Clues:
The title, All For One And One For All = Three men who carried swords like the Three Musketeers, and one of them tried to stand in for all of them in the fencing competition.
Five colored rings = Five Olympic rings. Each circles a letter = MCMLX = 1960
The paired clues are the ones that spell out the details of what happened to this team:
1A + 10D =September / In August = The games were held in August and September, 1960
17A + 61A = African/ Hoaxers = The three Tunisian men who tried to pull off the fencing hoax
28A + 57A = Pistols/ Fired At = One of them fired a pistol at/ near a judge
37A + 68A = Swimmer/ Near Drown = One of them nearly drowned in the swimming competition
42A + 44A + 7D =Three/ Fell off/ Horses = All three fell off their horses in the Equestrian competition
Additional, more general clues that point to the 1960 Olympics:
17A Cassius (Clay) won a gold medal in boxing at the 1960 Olympics
19A Romulus = The founder of Rome, where the games were held
27A AG = Silver, an Olympic medal (the incorrect clue of Gold would have worked here too.)
34A Ran = One of the events of the Pentathlon is running
67A Epee = The type of sword used in fencing, the event they cheated in
Hint: Threes and Twos Go Together/ Five Become One (with 5 O's colored) =
Threes and Twos Go Together = The answers to the clues that go together are the 11 answers that identify all of the missteps, errors and cheating this team did during their events.
Five Become One = The five colored rings together become the Olympic symbol. Also there are five events in the Modern Pentathlon competition.
