Similar to chapter1, there are strong references to horseracing.
This reads as if Grandfather is manager of the training barn at or near the racetrack.
examples:
Sharp snap of the old switch
Drying towels.
Other paper forms (racing form)
Grandfather's gait.
Never broke his stride.
Covering the same ground in the same time.
Glancing at the charts (in the racing form)
Information on the post board.
An existing name was replaced by a new one (scratch)
Small counter (betting counter)
Hand-drawn five pointed black star in the last box of the first row = Saturday, May 2nd.
First Saturday in May is Kentucky Derby.
(run for the roses)
Years that fit are 1959, 1964, 1970, 1981.
It would not be an earlier year due to mention of The Ten Commandments, which was released 1956.
Hunting and fishing with Ernie could be reference to Ernest Hemingway.
Sexton should be sextant.
Chosen not by God but by determination - could be reference to Cal (in The Bow, ch11).
What has me puzzled is the gold fish symbol on the second box of the next line, which would be a Monday.
One long shot possibility is that it marks Orthodox Easter Monday - which was on May 4 1964.
If correct and taken together, the story takes place in 1964.
That is also called Bright Monday or New Monday - which could reference the "move into the light" of the backward.
Other note: The Whistle Pig website has a quote from Hemingway story The Big Two-Hearted River.
If that site is still run by Duck, it is another reference to Hemingway.
I believe the numbers on the site indicate "keep searching".
