The 48 states could represent all the places visited on a music tour.
The description of the singer / songwriter matches David Allan Coe.
But why reference him?
I actually had never heard of him. He did write songs that made others famous.
If correct, the timeframe is likely late 80's to 90's.
Otherwise doesn't seem to fit with the other stories.
I don't know the allusions in this chapter.
"Black gypsy dress" caught my eye as did "gray gypsy wood" in an earlier chapter did.
