Instructions for the License Plate hunt (read carefully):
1. This is a fully armchair hunt.
2. Your challenge is to construct a quote using the license plates.
3. Use only the plate numbers & letters. The state names, dates, mottos, stickers, etc. are not part of the solution.
4. Change numbers to letters as needed, ie: W114 might be WAN or WKD. You will need to figure out which combination is correct for the quote.
5. Any zeros might be the end of a two-digit number (20) or the beginning of a single digit number (02).
6. If there is a dot, dash or symbol separating the sides, use all of the letters/ numbers from one side only, ie: If the plate is W24 - 2713, use either W24 or 2713, but not both.
7. One license plate gives you the year of the quote, and two plates are 'extras', not used in the quote.
8. Each license plate contains a piece of the quote. Once you think you have the right letters, arrange them in the correct order to complete the quote.
9. If you have any questions or comments, or need clarification, contact me via private messaging here on MW.
10. Submit your answers to me via private messaging here on Mysterious Writings. The solution will include the complete quote, the year of the quote, and who wrote/ said it. Also whether you are currently registered for the Tribute hunt.
11. The hunt will be open for two weeks (2/28-3/14)
12. Winners must have a US address (see initial post for prizes)*
*If someone with a non-US address submits the correct answer, I will provide an alternative prize. They will be eligible for the drawing for the free $19.79 registration.
Have fun and good luck!

Very cool concept. If you can clarify, are we building real words or vanity plate type words??

Very cool concept. If you can clarify, are we building real words or vanity plate type words?? All are real words, parts on each plate, needing to be reassembled. All letters on each plate are in the correct order. They just need to be strung together to make the quote. The year is in numbers, like 2022.

To answer another question I received:
For the green Kansas plate, consider both the vertical BU and the number 76 ,but not the word TRUCK.
For the blue Maryland plate, only use the number 1415. The vertical PSC and ZONE are not used for the quote.
Sorry for any confusion.
Be sure to let me know if you need any more clarification.

The teaser picture was put up as a general example of how the hunt works. Using only one side of each plate, it reads: FUN = FUN PVS 23-9 = WI 20-8 192 = TH 16-12 BM =PL 1-20 157 =AT 158 5-19 =ES 6 6-9-19-8 = (red) FISH = Fun with plates.
(red) FISH = the unused, or "red herring" plate.
For this example, the plates are in order, but they are not in order for the real hunt.

Can you explain what the scratched out letters/numbers are in this example? I missed the teaser. Sorry. Thanks!

That would be the instruction #6 above. Even though some plates have blank space separators only!

Another question answered for more clarification:
Q: Are the license plate letters in the correct order even if the plates aren't? Do we have to anagram any of the letters?
A: The letters are in order. The plates are scattered randomly. No anagramming is necessary. So you might have three plates:
2114, 8A, and 2256
This would be UN, HA, and VEF
Rearranged, they would read HA/VEF/UN or, HAVE FUN

This seems like it would be so simple, I keep thinking I'll log in and see that all the prizes have been claimed!
