Solution to Rex's Adventure:
Part 1: The MAYAN DATE for this year's SPRING EQUINOX, March 20, 2022 is 13.0.9.6.16 or: 13 bak'tun, 0 k'atun, 9 tun, 6 winal, 16 k'in (plus Haab: 14 and Tzolk'in 13, represented by the clock)
Part 2. The MAP is a copy of the Mayan ruins of UXMAL in Mexico
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Method:
To find the Mayan date, you needed to count the number of each of the 5 "creatures" shown on the map: 13 GHOSTS, 16 BIRDS, 5 TURTLES, 9 SNAKES, and zero (0) POLAR BEARS.
Then match their colors to the colors in the borders. On each side each color is shown just once and they are shown in the same order: WHITE, BLUE, RED, GREEN, BLACK.
After putting the numbers in order by color, WHITE-13, BLUE-0, RED-9, GREEN-6, and BLACK-16, they needed to have a period between each number: 13.0.9.6.16. Google this set of numbers and the Mayan long count calendar comes up.
13.0.9.6.16 = March 20, 2022, the spring equinox, the day this hunt started and "where the fun begins"
Once you know this is a Mayan map, you can search for the map of Uxmal and match it to the one in the hunt.
Explanation of map details:
1. ENTRANCE, located at the parking area/ entrance to Uxmal. 2 yellow orbs represent the color for this date.
2. SWAN LAKE is in the shape of what is called the DARK RIFT, the dust cloud that obscures the Milky Way. The Dark Rift begins at CYGNUS, the swan. It is offset on the map because on the Uxmal map, there is no lake.
3. TEA ROOM represents the constellation SAGGITARIUS (which looks like a teapot), where the Dark Rift ends. The handle on the teapot resembles omega, suggesting the 'end'.
4. MAGICIAN STAGE is located at the PYRAMID OF THE MAGICIAN. The Masquerade hare decorates the stage as an homage to Kit Williams, Masquerade.
5. AVIARY is located at the QUADRANGLE OF THE BIRDS, which has bird sculptures on the roof. There are 16 BLACK BIRDS. 16 is the 5th number of the Mayan calendar for March 20, 2022: 16 k'in
6. CORN MAZE is located at the NUNNERY QUADRANGLE. The glyph for the Haab date is CORN. The shape of the entrance to the maze resembles a doorway on the Nunnery, and the corn stalks represent the many columns.
7. PERFORMANCE STAGE is located at the STELAE PLATFORM.
8. HAUNTED HOUSE is located at the CEMETERY GROUP of ruins. There are 13 WHITE GHOSTS. 13 is the 1st number of the Mayan calendar for March 20, 2022: 13 bak'tun
9. BASKERBALL COURT is located at the BALL COURT, where they played a game similar to basketball.
10. WISHING WELL is located at the ROUND STONE STRUCTURE.
11. TURTLES, located at the HOUSE OF THE TURTLES. There are 6 GREEN TURTLES. 6 is the 4th number of the Mayan Calendar for March 20, 2022: 6 winal
12. INFORMATION, located at the PALACE OF THE GOVERNOR. On the wall is a copy of the map. The UP arrow is the shape of a unique doorway on the Governor's Palace.
13. SNAKES, also at the PALACE OF THE GOVERNOR, which is decorated with serpents. There are 9 RED SNAKES. 9 is the 3rd number of the Mayan Calendar for March 20, 2022: 9 tun
14. POLAR BEAR. Exhibit is CLOSED, and the polar bear has died, so there are 0 BLUE BEARS. 0 is the 2nd number of the Mayan Calendar for March 20, 2022: 0 k'atun (on the original Uxmal map there is nothing at this location). The bear died in 2012, which was when some claimed the "end of the world" would happen, predicted by the Mayan calendar - the end of 12 bak'tun.
15. TIME SQUARE, located at the SOUTH TEMPLE. There are nine Mayan "LORDS OF THE NIGHT." Xiuhtecuhtli is G1, the lord associated with March 20, 2022. He is the god of TIME and FIRE. The time on the clock, 2:13, or 14:13 = the numbers of the Haab (14) and Tzolk'in (13), additional numbers on the Mayan Calendar for this date. The two candles represent FIRE. The glyph for the Mayan Tzolkāin date is for WAX/ CANDLE. This is in the South Temple at the ruins and SOUTH is the direction associated with the date of March 20, 2022.
16. GIFT SHOP, located at the GREAT PYRAMID. In the window are gifts from each of the exhibits. The wall calendar was too small to put dates, but I showed an enlarged version in the teaser image that shows the layout for the month of December, 2012. "Sale Ends Thurs" is a reference to the last day of 12 bak'tun, Dec. 20, 2012, the day the world was supposed to come to an end, which fell on a Thursday.
17. FORTUNE TELLER, located at the PYRAMID OF THE WITCH. _______________________________________________________________________________________ Borders:
COME ONE COME ALL = Welcoming people to the amusement park.
STEP RIGHT UP = Welcomes people to the park, plus a vague reference to the stepped pyramids at Uxmal.
AROUND AND AROUND WE GO = The repeating cycles of the Mayan calendar. The 52-year CALENDAR ROUND uses the Haab (a 365-day agricultural cycle) and the Tzolk'in (a 260-day religious cycle). The LONG COUNT lasts 5125 years, then the cycle begins all over again (the last Long Count ended on Dec. 20, 2012).
WHERE WE STOP NOBODY KNOWS = The Mayan calendar is round and uses a series of cycles, each with a different day count, all interacting with each other. Where you stop on each combination of cycles determines the date.
COLORED LETTERS: All the border letters are colored. The only important ones are the colors of 13 ghosts (WHITE), 0 polar bears (BLUE), 9 snakes (RED), 6 turtles (GREEN) and 16 birds (BLACK), which appear in the same order on each side. = 13.0.9.6.16, the Mayan Long Count for March 20, 2022.
TREES IN THE CORNERS: In the Mayan creation myth, the gods put a tree in each of the four corners of the world to hold up the heavens. The four corners were NSEW, so the trees each point in one of these directions. PARK SIGN: "The Fun Starts Here" refers to the date our fun began, and the answer to the hunt: March 20, 2022. "Est. 1970" is 52 years ago, so is equal to one cycle of the Mayan Calendar Round.
NAME OF THE PARK, "Rex's Adventure Park" is simply in memory of my cat Rex, who died in December 2021 while I worked on the hunt.
