“The Story of Leveret” Is it really over?
In folktale fashion, “The Story of Leveret: An Enchanting Hare”, by Beth Hovanec and William Gardner, ended with a surprise final finish with the tortoise beating the hare!
It was an exciting, nail-biting finish with three teams racing to find the token for the Master Key. Team Bug Catchers were clearly in the lead, and Team Palmford with jrrag assisting, were closing the gap. Then the unthinkable happened. Two teams joined forces. The Debuggers and the Flying Ferrets became the Debugging Ferrets and came in for a photo finish in a MW T-Shirt!
The Leveret hunt began on Earth Day, back in April. It had participants traversing the country in search of tokens for prizes. But the hunt was designed with a new, never before seen strategy involved, one that required participants to gather information on the backs of tokens to move forward to the next level of the hunt. That information would be shared publicly after a certain amount of time passed. It was in the token holder’s best interest to gain as much information as possible before that information went public. After a very important clue was released, this had the players scrambling at the end to get the valuable information from the higher level tokens. Armchair puzzlers were up all night trying to solve the cryptic puzzles. Friends and family members were called in to assist with boots on the ground. It really was a race to the finish!
“The Story of Leveret” with its forest creatures and gems was influenced by Michael Stadthler’s, “A Treasure’s Trove”. After ATT ended, Stadthler released two more prizes, a Pook gem, and a Rusful gem. Pook was the lovable protagonist of the story, and Rusful was the evil antagonist. Just like ATT, the authors of “The Story of Leveret” have announced that there will be an “Epilogue” released this Friday, on July 22nd, with the chance to win two more character prizes, Leveret and Porcupine! The epilogue features two new puzzles, totally independent of the previous 17 puzzles in the book. So participants can start with a clean slate. However, you will need the book to be able to solve these puzzles.
“The Story of Leveret” was a huge success. Those who participated loved the design of the hunt, the puzzles, the art and the story. Will there be a sequel? The authors have answered no. But the grand prize winners, The Debugging Ferrets, have generously donated their monetary winnings to the authors to put towards a new treasure hunt. Beth has said that she intends to “pay it forward” with some new hunts that will be free to the community.
