Intelligence comes in many forms - life smarts, book smarts, street smarts to name a few. Can a redneck be intelligent? What did Forrest mean when talking about rednecks? Look at the definition of redneck: the senses of this term are usually used with disparaging intent, implying negative stereotypical traits such as ignorance and bigotry. Informal: Usually Disparaging. n. 1. (a term used to refer to an uneducated white farm laborer, esp. from the South.) 2. (a term used to refer to a bigot or reactionary, esp. from the rural working class.) Is this really what he meant to say? Nothing Forrest says comes across disparaging so I don’t think that is his intent. Maybe he meant redneck as like an “average joe” person. Nothing fancy or glamorous. I agree Heidi and that's how I took it, however, he does like to point out that people don't know the true definitions of words...

I'm average as they come. Have a little education level. But a wild imagination. But ask your self could you be over qualified in solving the poem.If the imagination is more inportant then knowledge .. But the poem is written to asset all. The poem is written as simple as it can get if old man joe can figure it out.

I think ff knows the big secret. All people have intelligence, it's a matter of developing it. That's up to the individual. Exercises of our brains by thought, looking at things from different perspectives and at new angles. It's really no different than learning to fish, and then to fish well, and then to make your own flies and all the good spots.
