Does anyone have any thoughts on the moon phase dial, shown in the puzzle? I think it must be used for something...but I haven't been able to get anywhere with my ideas on it yet. I'm thinking it ties in to the symbols, or how we read the symbols. I know where this particular image comes from, but many old clocks had the moon phase dials. This video shows how it works - www.youtube.com/watch?v=6BCCWJUP120 (This video was made by an uncle for his nephew - it's a cute video, but look at the part after the beginning that shows how the moon moves around the dial.) The moon phase shown in the puzzle looks like it's waning crescent, or maybe last quarter. If you mirror image it, it would be waxing crescent or 1st quarter. The dial is not shown at the correct angle on the page. Any thoughts?

While it is probably obvious, but I see the number three in the moon phase dial. and one of the clues on the edge says..."This group of three will help with clues"...other than that I aint got nuthin....

The moon was simply a "waning moon" and part of the Kubla Khan poem that was illustrated in the painting.
There were several descriptions in the poem that were illustrated in the art so that you would know for sure that you had indeed made a connection. The waning moon was one of these, as well as the cave of ice, the floating hair, the dulcimer, the milk and honey (bee)...
