If we are going down a canyon.

So why would we use put in below by going down a canyon when it tells us to take it in the canyon down.
This sounds like he did buried the TC because of put in below what other then the ground can you put in below.
Your not going to stumble up on the TC. I believe forrest found a crack or a hole made out of stone put the TC in the hole or crack below.Then covered the TC with rock first then leaves and then put a log or two on the TC. Then why do we need to turn a log or two over. The poem takes you to a specific end where you come to a halt. Now turn over the log and start digging with a good pair of gloves with your hands.
