I was merely speculating. Give yourself credit. Stay on this!

Missoula.... often referred to as " the banana belt of Montana," and in addition The Clark River as it was once named..... translates to 'nmesulekw' in Salish. It's also interesting to note the Native American translation for Missoula: "a place of frozen water."
Two rather unique coincidences, IMO.

The first 2 clues. Begin it in Montana take it in the canyon down through Wyoming and Colorado Put in below Colorado in to New Mexico is the home of Brown the 3rd clue was solved by the first searcher that got within 200ft from there it's no place for the meek. Hmmm. Drop in latitude is your canyon down. For me in following the clues ties directly to this entire thread. The first clue I used pointed directly to Missoula and WWH. From there, using the poem as a guide, I landed at my next clue to use as my new point to begin (again) WWH. So far, I have taken a journey winding through the Rockies from beginning and end of the poem many times. Up until earlier tonight my thinking was that I am there. I'm not so sure now. Reason being is that I have lost count how many times I have begun WWH. The 9 clues is exactly what mike has stated. This poem is a tour of the entire Rocky Mountains using the poem as the Map and each clue as the Tour Guide. There are 9 different Tour Guides each of which has their own tour with Emphasis on your clue and the Knowledge it has related to the poem this time. I am on a journey of history, geology, pioneers and on and on. All of which builds on each other to be able to see the next clue. My journey has taken me from Missoula to now New Mexico where my next tour starts. ff has been correct in saying that you must start with clue 1 to understand how to get to the end. This has RUNG so true for me thus far. And, once again, this is ONLY IN MY OPINION and my opinion has change several times in my posts here at MY forum. My way of thinking changes with each step I take. For what it is worth, JUST ABOUT EVERY MEMBER ON THIS FORUM HAS HELPED ME. ***THANK YOU ALL***

One place you might end up is:
I highly suggest that you read the article in its entirety. * Amelia White lived 2 blocks away from FF's home; I found several areas of 'familiar' subjects, IMO... connected to both histories:
The School of Advanced Research was originally called "The School of American Archeology (1907.) In any event it's doubtful that the meek would even consider venturing too close! (Some once called it "The House of Hundred Dogs" as Ms. White also maintained a unique pet cemetery on the grounds.)
Much to learn if so inclined.
