I just returned today from my first BOTG experience. I am not sure that I would do it again this time of year, especially the river crossing.
My gf and I got really wet. We were miserable. The snow was awful to try to hike through and exhausting. We only got a few hours to search in my area when all was said and done. The area was so much bigger in person than it appeared to be online.
And in all that, I would do it again in a heartbeat. This is one of the most beautiful places in the world. Fits everything that Fenn has ever said. I was able to follow clues that led me to a perfect blaze that also happened to match up with a very very big clue from outside the poem (imagine a physical part of the landscape named The Bullet). I feel great about my spot and can't wait to go back.
The best part: I found out that I am going to be a dad! Life is beautiful. Thank you FF

I hope the gf that mentioned above is new MOM to be. My first BOTG was stopped at the beginning after reading the sign that said no hiking during hunting season. IT WAS HUNTING SEASON. 26 hard driving hours each way. 58 hour round trip from NC to Rockies and back. PLANNING MY NEXT TRIP NOW WITH MY SON.

Why would you go out in the middle of winter with snow and cross a river? Do you think this was a good decision? I just really think you should rethink what safety means. You should not be crossing a river and you should not be searching in winter. I’m glad you’re OK. And congratulations on becoming a dad. Is your girlfriend the one that’s pregnant? Is your girlfriend the one that got wet crossing a river? You have more to think about than just yourselves right now. OK. Consider yourself yelled at. Be safe. Be happy.

Not a fun drive, but well worth the effort. I think I want to go back in April if the budget allows.

Yes gf and soon to be wife is the one. It wasn't very deep and the river not that wide. It wasn't a good idea for certain and I won't be doing it ever again. Come warmer weather I hope I can find the TC to better provide. Amazing how your perspective changes so quickly.

Clearly you weren't searching in Wyoming or Montana: those states have been out of play for months, and will continue to be for at least another 2 1/2 months, probably longer.

I think those states have a very very low chance. I like the Cody area for various reasons, but it would take a long long time of scouring my area before I looked elsewhere.

Fennster: the chest is in Montana. You can take that to the bank. I'll never search in NM... except for Glorietta meteorites. ;-)

I'm of the same thinking; the farther north you go the least likely to find the tc even though I have 2 (very good) solves in Montana. My main reason for thinking closer to Santa Fe is ff hid the tc in 1 afternoon with 2 trips to his car. Yes, round trip with a plane and rental car is definitely possible but for me not plausible. I tend to think the whole trip took less than 6 hour to complete. Maybe even less since. ff said(not for sure) the wife didn't realize he had even left in the first place (paraphrasing and summarizing here). Yes, I know that ff has been very vague in describing his trip for a reason that he only knows and I understand that. Who knows, 2 trips to car could mean 2 afternoons and wife was out of town for a couple days hence reason she didn't realize.

Other searchers have different opinions. Yep, completely my opinion. And Diggin Gypsy's, and Jake Faulker's, and Hear Me All's, and some other veterans. But none of that matters because this isn't a popularity contest. If it were, everyone would be searching in New Mexico. ;-)

After my BOTG I would also be surprised if it was near my blaze, but that's a different story.

Well, if the treasure isn't in the Treasure State, then I will never find it because that's the only place I'll ever search. ;-) This is old, old, old news, but turn your copy of TTOTC upside down and compare it to a map of the U.S. The four pictures represent Idaho, Montana, Utah and Wyoming. Which state has the gold on it? Q.E.D. ;-)

It's not in a group like the cover would be showing it to be.
