Would it be reasonable to assume that FF could have walked 1 mile with an evaluation change of 1000 feet? I am not sure how difficult that would be.

Hi Van: one mile and 1000' vertical was probably doable (twice) for Forrest at age 79 within the specified time constraints. Personally, I think the vertical is far, far less than that, though.

van - a vertical gain of 1,000', over just one mile, is a lot, that is not a walk in the park, it is very challenging and will take at least twice as long as a mile on level ground....in technical ratings, it's a "moderately strenuous" rated due to the fairly short distance (1 mile) and gain in that mile.....you'll also factor in trail quality (rocks, boulders, streams - if any - etc.).

Don’t put restrictions on Mr. Fenn I absolutely will, and you're quite foolish if you don't. Forrest isn't an Olympic athlete or a god; he is but a man. And he wasn't a spring chicken when he hid the chest at age 79.

While hiking uphill on the mist trail in Yosemite in California, it took me an hour to go a mile. I was stopping to catch my breath because I am a flatlander. (I also was doing photographs.) But I am a super slow hiker and was really surprised how truly out of breath I was. Elevation alone is strenuous then add vertical hiking- boy. It would be fine if I lived in the mountains but basically 7000-8000 feet above my normal day to day... my heart was pounding in my throat! I kept resting until my heart slowed. I am also famous for dehydration. Those mountains really suck the moisture out. I really have to keep track of my fluid intake- my thirst center in my brain isn’t strong at all. Please remember to drink lots of water and have a ham sandwich for some salt intake.
